Wanna talk about hype when halo 3 was about to be released you would have thought that space aliens and Jesus worked together to produce a game that came with 4 free hookers, 50 tons of gold and a magic lamp...

I have never seen a game get so much press... EVER
GTA gets more, always.
This isn't exactly true.
GTA just gets a lot of free media so the christian right can scream about how horrible violent games like this are the work of the devil (that's what it usually amounts to even though those words aren't really used)
What those people don't realize is they are actually making the game more appeasing to certain brackets of the "precious youth" they are trying to protect from it. Good press, bad press... it's just free advertisement in the end.
You misunderstand, I said that it always gets the most press, all publicity is good publicity.

GTA IV- Having had so much fun with GTA: San Andreas, I figured this would, as the hype told me, be the game to end all games. Instead, every single on of the intro missions is just another tutorial on how to do one of the six billion things Rockstar put in the game, my cellphone rings off the hook with requests to go bowling with my stupid cousin, and the only way to make it stop is to put your cellphone on sleep, which also disables your ability to do story missions; wow Rockstar, total dick move right there.

COD:WAW- Another WW2 game about another grizzled soldier fighting his way through the Second World War with sheer manliness. Though what pisses me off most is the multiplayer, I DO NOT WANT TO LEVEL UP IN A FREAKING FPS! If I want to spend my time working endlessly to unlock better gear and get the much needed XP, I will go subscribe to World of Bloody Warcraft. What the hell happened to everyone being at the same level and having skill determine the outcome of a battle, not with CoD, once you join the elite group, you can forever oppress the new players with your ultra-guns while the newbies just sit there and cry.

Halo 3- I can't say much, 'cause most of the complaints have already been addressed. The story is as cliche and crappy as the Inheritance Cycle, and I don't want to take orders from some commander who looks like she turned 14 last week. The actual gameplay is fun but isn't revolutionary, everything Halo does has been done countless times before, Halo just happens to do it well. I'd complain about the prevalence of screaming prepubescent children on that game but then I realize that it's so much fun to kill them that I would be sad if there were none.

Assassin's Creed- Not incredible, story is more tedious than it needs to be, and the modern day Templar stuff is completely superfluous. I really don't care about playing some dude in a white sweater when I can go seriously mess around as his ancestor in the Middle Ages. The gameplay is decently fun, but most of it has been done before, besides, it gets annoying cause everyone treats it like it was handed down from on high rather than just being yet another middle ages action game.

Fallout 3- Overrated as Hell, loses most of the old Fallout's trademark black comedy and charm, also gives you no choice between dog-kicking villain and orphanage-building saint.

Half-Life games- I like them okay, they're pretty fun, the unnecessarily long vehicle sequences and stupid physics puzzles become nothing short of frustrating. We want to go on an epic adventure to save the world, not stack boxes to reach a ladder.

Resident Evil games- Universally-frustrating controls, wonky inventory systems, and convoluted puzzles do not make for a fun game Capcom.

Fable- Why does everyone like these games so much? If you don't do quests or something of that sort than you have nothing to do. Oh, and sidenote, property management and all that other side stuff they have REALLY wears out its welcome after a while.

Well I have to ask if you were really paying attention before the halo 3 release then. because I couldn't turn on the tv , visit a website, or open my email without hearing about it.
I've never experienced that with GTA.

oh well, I suppose we can just agree to disagree and allow this thread to carry on from here.

Final Fantasy 7. Lesse, we have horrible story with tooting music.
Choppy frame-rates during action sequences? You bet!
Poorly thought out characters that carried on the same old trappings every other JRPG has ever used before and since? Uh-huh!
How about those graphics? What's that you say? you love it when a ridiculously low-polygon character resembling a Legoland toy shuffles along on a backdrop that looks like a post card? How bloody friggin immersively brilliant!

I can not, to this day, understand why this game is remembered so fondly.
While everyone can have their own opinion, I'm going to have to point out that you can't judge this game by today's generation (because it's 2 generations old for a start).

Nor can you use the graphics argument, it's a very old game, it was one of the first games for the PS1, from a company that that previously had just been making 2D games for the SNES, so they're jumping source and engine, an engine which had to be built from the ground up for that game, when 3D wasnt understood too well.

You need to basis on what it set, and accomplished at the time when it came out, or are we going to start hurling abuse at Mario and Link to the Past now, because they're old games? Games like Mario, Link to the Past, and yes, Final Fantasy 7 set the standards for todays games, the Psycho, the Matrix, and the Godfather set the stage for future film, that's what those games did, FF7 for RPGs, saying FF7 has bad character design, on the basis that games NOW follow that is stupid, because it was one of the first, it didnt take influence from today, today took influence from it.

Killzone 2 - very mediocre campaign and multiplayer.

Infamous - every time i hear someone praise this game i die a little on the inside, and why is there a movie being made for this game already? its only been released for a few months and sony already act like its a big franchise that loads of people would want to see a movie of...

Also, im not sure why there are so many halo 3 haters, i think there'd be less of them if they had more of an open mind instead of getting ready to nit pick and try to destroy the franchise just because its popular... -_-

And yes i know not everyone is like this (everyone will always have different opinions), but i'm sure most of you know that these kind of people exist.

Far Cry 2: Its more running around in circles doing errands instead of any good fightin and shootin.

Haol 1-3: I hear more posts about warning me of flames wars than any flame wars actually happening whenever HALO is brought up.

Call of Duty: Its a great game, just over-hyped

Its a fight between Halo 3 and MGS4 and SSBB if Wii counts for me. Though a lot of hyped games lately are falling into the overhyped category. There is kind of an ignorance is bliss feel to games lately.

Ok, a lot of people have mentioned how this thread could result in a Flame war, and I agree. It was rather foolish and short sighted of me to initiate such a thread.

I would really not want to be responsible for any Flame wars, so by all means continue to comment, but please respect the opinions of others.

Metal Gear Solid 4, I know it's cool to hate on popular things but every time I started to enjoy MGS4 I inevitably tripped over another dull cutscene.

Prince of Persia '08 was garbage. You basically play the first thirty minutes of the game over and over again until the end, the only thing changing the the was the environs are skinned. God, the combat was lame, the re-re-re-repeating boss battles were the worst in any game this gen, and the story was, well, not even there? The platforming was done better in the last gen PoP games. Ugh.

Personally, I found GTA4 too be a bit over hyped. I know it's been said, but it was too, dark, for a GTA game. I do like what story I've gotten so far, so thats something, but it lacks the, well, over the top mucking about as the lord of lords that Saints Row 2 had.

So I missed the last last part of the opening line, sue me. From what I recall, Final Fantasy 8, which is in my opinion (yes, like you I too have one), was miles above FF7 in it's graphical quality. Chrono Cross, was also built similarly, and for it's time was a feast for they eyes.

And since you're so keen on pointing out the parts of the post I missed reading, I might remind you that most of my post mentions a lot more to dislike about the most overrated game of all time. You are right, however, I missed the latter half of the opening question, so my apologies for the misread, though I stand by my opinion, whether you like it or not.

As for of this gen, harder to say, but my vote would go with Halo 3. I played that game start to finish and was overwhelmed with a strong sense of 'meh'. I never partook of the multiplayer, since the idea that I would be slammed in the ears every three seconds by a teenager with a lot of repressed racist feelings seemed like a buzz-kill waiting to happen. The game was pretty technically unimpressive from what I experienced, and hype-laden reviews aside, most others seem to either fall into the same camp as I do, or the rabid irrational fanboy camp that wishes to grind anyone that doesn't worship Master Chief into a fine powder.

There, happy now?
