Many I'd suggest have been mentioned so just chip in

Das Leben Den Anderen
Amelie
Momento
Joyeux Noel
Dekalog
Taxi Driver
Seventh Seal
Der Letzen Tagen

Many many films are worth watching if I had to pick one be simply too hard.

Ugh, you thought Dark Knight and BB were intelligent movies? Man...The only good part of Dark Knight was Heath Ledger as the joker. You want to see an intelligent comic book movie? Go watch Watchmen, it makes the new batman movies look like they were written by a five year old. I'm not kidding.
Assholish or complete web-blanket protagonists spouting existential pseudo-phillosophy in silly moulded-plastic costumes. I'll pass. I spent the entire duration of that movie not really giving a shit about anything on screen.

The Shawshank Redemption, LOTR series, The Matrix, and Citizen Kane. Believe me, it's not called the best movie of all time for nothing.

Anything by Quentin Tarentino, because he makes some of the most thought provoking movies ever, and not to mention they are extremely enjoyable *cough* kill bill *cough*.
Now, by thought-provoking, you meant brain poison. Right?

Nice list from the thread as a whole, but honestly I'm shocked we've gotten to page 3 without a mention of Jurassic Park or Jaws.

Also every childhood would be incomplete without several of the Disney animated films, who do you know that didn't grow up watching 1 or 2 of them ad nauseum?

Anyone who is in any way interested in sci-fi should have already seen District 9. That film is glorious.
