I barely ever watch movies. I was looking through the list and I've seen about 1/10 of all the movies listed. To give a better estimate, I've never seen any of the movies mentioned in the OP.

GO ME!

I've seen all the Star Wars movies at least about ten times each for the original trilogy, and maybe five times each for the later trilogy. I've also seen the Lord of the Rings trilogy about maybe three times all the way through each one?

EDIT: Someone said "Kingdom of Heaven." I fell asleep during that movie. It's the only film that has ever done that to me.

Will Ferrell and Nicolas Cage. ANY MOVIE WITH THEM IN IT, SUCKS. Yes, Night at the Roxbury was ruined for me BECAUSE of Will. He's just so...UNFUNNY. And Nicolas is so bland. He reminds me of that guy who does the Red-Eye commercials. You know, that older gentleman.

3. Band of Brothers
4. Lord of the Rings (the whole series)
5. Anything by Pixar
6. Jesus Christ: Vampire Slayer

There are many more, but that's just the top of my head.

Any Miyazaki movie (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo, etc). The guy is the George Lucas of anime (except without the prequels). Also the first three Indiana Jones and Star Wars films, Saving Private Ryan, Watchmen (the REAL smart comic book movie), Clerks, and pretty much all the movies that get parodied all the time (Godfather, Citizen Kane, etc).

A little background. I work at a cinema, and during a slow patch the staff all sat down for a cup of coffee. We started talking about the new James Bond movie being put on hold, and the trainee projectionist said he had never seen any of the James Bond movies. I was taken aback by this as they are such a large (in popularity and number of iterations)franchise and he works at a cinema. Pressing him further it turns out he had never seen the Godfather, Pulp Fiction, The Matrix, Blade Runner, or A Clockwork Orange.

So I ask you, Escapists, what films, if any, do you think everyone needs to see?
From all those movies I've only seen The Matrix.
You've never seen a James Bond film?
No, never. Apart from those few minutes when changing channels when it happens to come on TV.

Full metal jacket, Star Wars, Taxi driver(if only to get the "are you talking to me" line), Lord of the rings, Watchmen(a good super hero movie)and Matrix. Guess most of them have been mentioned already and there are of course a lot more must have seen movies, but those where the ones that popped up in my mind.

Edit: The Russian Stalker movie, if only because it is a good example of the opposite of how an american would have done it.

You should have seen the goonies, the sandlot and princess bride while you were growing up otherwise your childhood was deprived. You should also see The Room just because of how hilariously bad it is.
If you thought the room was funny on a small screen then imagine watching it on a big screen it is SO much better. I went to see a live screening of it about a month back in London and I nearly died laughing. My throat was very sore afterwards from 2 hours straight laughing. I beg anyone that has seen the room to see a live showing. Look it up on youtube if you want to see for yourself.

OT: A couple of my favourites are...solaris, moon(good if you like 2001, has a similar vibe), fight club, saints and soldiers and 1408.

Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Just because the argument 'comic book movies are stupid' is something I hear way too often.
But those movies were stupid though, and considering that comic books/movies are at their best when they accept their quirky stupidity and just try to have fun with it, well...

Eh, nevermind...

Eulogy, Yojimbo and Secretary (last one only if you are mature enough to look through premises).
That is a hell of an eclectic and great set of films to include!

This for sure!

There are many films that I would say need to be seen but being a film major that makes it a bit tough to pick the most worthy. I mean in some ways Wizard of Oz and Citizen Kane are extremely poignant and need-to-see films. Though not so much for the average cinema goer. I'd default to the Academy's list of top 100 movies, though there are many more than that that should definitely be seen.

Dark Knight and Shawshank Redemption. Forrest Gump also, as that is the only film that has ever made me cry. Apart from My Dog Skip when I was 7

Kick Ass must also be seen. Never has a film made me laugh at death so much, then one death make me nearly cry. THAT is good directing
