The 90's had Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Freakazoid, Rugrats, Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, The Xmen and Batman animated series, Rocko's Modern Life, Hey Arnold, Recess. The Simpsons when back when it was good...

The 00's have Family Guy and South Park. All the kid's cartoons nowadays just don't seem to have that... I don't know... spark, that they had in the 90's. Maybe that's nostalgia kicking in, but I'm not so sure...

Does anime count?

If so, both the 1990s and the 2000s were good.
Even before the 90s were good(for anime)

90's win, why? Reboot, it is quite literally part of my childhood.

Also, when have you ever seen a cartoon nowadays make fun of the censor? Thank you animaniacs and reboot.

The current generation sucks. I can honestly say that every cartoon since about 2001 sucks (with the exception of things like American Dad and anime)

90's cartoons and before were the best.

90's for life, I miss Cat-Dog, Hey Arnold, Rocket Power, and a bunch more that I can't remeber because people discontinued them.
Angry Beavers, another classic.

Well, there's gonna be an inherent bias in this poll - since the majority of people on this website were in their prime cartoon-watching days in the 90s, of course the 90s is gonna get all the votes. I admit I voted for that option too, but I honestly don't know where I'd be today without South Park (certaintly not as entertained, at the very least). So yeah, the 90s had all those great cartoons that I loved when I was a kid, and the 00s has South Park, and to a lesser extent Family Guy. Honestly, for me, it's closer than I would have thought.
Both of those shows are from the 90s. Hell, the original South Park short is from 1992.

When I see commercials for some of the newer stuff on TV, I die a little inside. Kids cartoons used to be awesome. Now, the vast majority of them are utter crap. I feel sorry for this generation, because they missed out on shows that were actually good. Granted, every era has some lame cartoons that nobody likes, but that's ALL this era seems to be. The only good cartoon I've actually seen come out of the 00 era is Justice League. I haven't actually seen Avatar: The Last Airbender, so I can't make a call on that. Spongebob used to be well-written, but it's been going downhill recently. You know what people who make cartoons should do? DO WHAT THEY DID IN THE 90'S AND ACTUALLY FRIGGEN' TRY!!!! Now, to further prove my point, I'll give a list of some cartoons I grew up on, along with their modern-day counterparts.

Spider-Man > The Spectacular Spider-Man

X-Men > X-Men: Evolution

Batman: The Animated Series > Batman: The Brave and the Bold

Digimon > this generation of Pokemon

The original Pokemon > this generation of Pokemon

Iron Man > Iron Man: Armored Adventures

Fantastic Four > Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Superheroes

Medabots > Yu-Gi-Oh!, Bakugan, etc.

Superman > Legion of Superheroes, Krypto the Superdog, etc.

Sonic SatAM > Sonic X (Which could have been better had 4Kids not butchered the English dub and dropped it in a gutter)

This next one isn't a cartoon, but it proves my point.

Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers (The original) > Whatever Power Rangers we have now

So, which generation of kid's cartoons is better? Yeah, I thought so.

I will admit, the 00's aren't all bad, but it's like what the gaming market has turned into - you have to trudge your way though filth to reach the golden nuggets of glory (a good example of this in my view is Transformers Animated).

But I voted the 90's. Reading the thread took me back to my childhood...and the 90's also had more mature toned cartoons than today - Beast Wars for example.

Also, a lot of the anime I can tolerate comes from this era. Ghost in the Shell, Neon Genesis Evangellion and Patlabor being a handful (although that last one may have been late 80's, my memory isn't as great as it once was).

And:
- The Powerpuff Girls
- Ed Edd n' Eddy, Johnny Bravo
- Courage the Cowardly Dog
- Eek the Cat (especially the affiliated Terrible Thunder Lizards)
- Metabots (whoever mentioned that before: thánk you, I wanted a metabot a gazillion times more than I wanted a Pokémon, robots > weird animals, shows I've always been a nerd)
- Dexter's Lab
- Biker Mice from Mars
- Bobby's World
- The Rugrats (an incredibly fascinating cartoon, the plots were so simple, but seen through the eyes of toddlers they became grand adventures, brilliant)
- Batman: The Animated Series
- X-Men: The Animated Series
- Earthworm Jim
- The Tick
- Darkwing Duck
- Samurai Pizza Cats (probably my favourite cartoon of all time)
- ReBoot
- Rocko's Modern Life
- The Rescue Rangers
- TaleSpin

Is that enough or do I have to go on to prove the dominance of the 90's?
Courage the Cowardly Dog! *squeals* :D

I grew up with 90's toons, ergo, they win on that merit alone. However, I have noticed that, compared to newer age cartoons, they were much more 'ballsy' in terms of subject matter.

A perfect example is the Freaky Fred episode of Courage the Cowardly Dog:

They essentially force psychopathic tendencies right down your throat. But let's face it: CTCD was about pitch black in terms of humor to begin with, so this was nothing special.
It can even be argued that Fred was a successor of sorts to Sweeney Todd.
I remember that episode ;). I guess they can't do such things anymore because of all the new rules. I mean they banned smoking in cartoons, didn't they?

I'll take 40s cartoons over the recent stuff. Screwy Squirrel, vintage Daffy Duck, The Cat Concerto...

That having been said, though, Sheep in the Big City is the most underrated cartoon of all time.
