I like the MW2 system of knifing, the only thing I will agree is that it needs to be a separate weapon, like the tactical knife is, or have toss in a negative effect after you use the knife. For example if you're wielding a two handed gun you knife someone, you need to take a second or two to put the gun back in your hands and reaim it. No knifing one guy and blowing the guy behind him to ashes with your assault rifle. Other than that I'm fine with the instant kill system. Let's be honest here a system like CS while its great that its a nice humiliation/skill fest or whatever you want to call it. People rarely use the damn thing seriously because it just can't beat out any of the weapons, even in close range. From years of playing I've seen so many people run in, get maybe a single strong attack and just get popped in the head because the other player has tons of time to turn, aim, and shoot. Instant kill, imo, works because it actually adds to the arsenal of weapons you can choose instead of it being a side thought that people just screw around with.

i like cods (not commando though) and battlefields because a knife would almost certainly kill you, if not injure you badly, the only reason the melee system in halo takes longer is because you hit them with your gun, not a sharp deadly weapon which again is realistic, but the riot sheild in MW2..... why would that kill you, i doubt it would even hurt that much seeing as they usually do it from a crouched position

Changing from a big gun like a rifle to a knife or somesuch is time consuming. Whatever happened to hitting someone with the butt of your gun to stun them, then shoot them?

I just find it stupid that the rocket that just exploded half a foot away from me does less damage compared to an elbow to the face.

Halo 2 had the best melee system ever in a game. The strength of the melee was determined by placement and movement. A melee to the back is an instant kill, a jump melee is almost twice as strong as a standing melee, and a running melee is a little bit more powerful than a standing melee. None of them except the assassination are instant kills, ever. That's how it should be.

Forgiveness is a good thing. Players should have the chance to correct when they make a mistake, and be punished for continuing to make said mistake. Example: Double-jumping in platformers. Simple device used for correcting aerial momentum in what would ordinarily be a very unfriendly environment for spacial reasoning, particularly on account of depth perception. Same thing here. Hit once, you lose a ton of health but have the opportunity to get back to a long range. Hit a second time, you're dead. Still harsh, but less frustrating as you at least get the sense that you had a chance to correct.

I've always thought that COD's system was better than Halo's, though each have their advantages and disadvantages. I hate how COD's system is so quick that you cannot fight back in multiplayer when a guy attacks you from behind. But in an opposite position, I like it. So it balances out.

Other: Team Fortress 2. They did it very well. Balanced and viable in close-quarters combat. While less powerful with a regular attack than a gun, the crit chance of a Melee weapon is much higher than that of other weapons

I agree, team fortress 2 seems to have the right idea with this.
Although, some of the melee weapons on that are better than using a gun.

I liked the Resident Evil 5 melee system; major damage but you could only deal it out under certain circumstances. On higher difficulties, I took great pleasure in knee-capping somebody so that I could deliver a crushing uppercut and save myself some ammo. It was even better when playing cooperatively because you could set melee opportunities up for your partner.

I like CS melee method, more games should do that. And if people complain, they get told to fuck off.

I like the melee system in games like CS and TF2 where you can't teleport 10 feet and insta-kill enemies. On a side note, I love the sight of a Spy rocketing off from a crit-wrench, and Targelanders FTW!!

I think that Melee should be a valid option, perferably as either seperate weapons with various pros and cons, or a weak-ish pistol whip sorta deal.

probably halo for the most part, counter strike isn't bad, cod defintly needs to switch to that method, but preferrably i choose halo, idk, it just feels right, its not over powered and its not completely useless either.

I have two theories

1. Let it be like Halo where it takes more than one hit to kill unless its from behind

2. If you let the melee kill in one hit let it be like BF in where the melee is slower than "speed knife" of COD that way its a balance where the other person might still be able to kill you to, also if you melee get the tags or mementos

I mind of prefer L4D2's melee system and hope that one day it will be integrated into a kickass team fortress style shooter. You can melee attack with all weapons but its useful only to push enemies back, free allies and maybe kill the weaker types of enemies with repeated hits, but you can forgo your pistol for a melee weapon, which do lots of damage but are balanced by low range and relatively slow attack speed as well as a lack of knockback. This could be used in a shooter where you could run with a shotgun and use your melee as a chance to line up a perfect shot, or you could use a melee weapon specifically as a tool of its own, where you have to be sneaky, or if you prefer long range you use your melee mostly as a deterent to counter melee heavy classes.

I miss the "Humiliation!" demonic badass voice when stabbing someone in the back on CSS. Good times.

I think FPS games should switch to third-person mode just for melee. Why? Simply because in first-person mode you are only able to control an about 90-150 degree angle in front of you, while the third-person view allows to control 360 degrees easily, which means you can use more advanced melee combat techniques (more gameplay depth).

Savage allows this FPS/TPS switch and provides even an option for separate mouse sensitivity settings in each mode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4EaaRoACrk#t=6m20s

I wish more games could handle it that way. :)
