Ok So GameCrush went down yesterday due to a server overload (10,000 hits in 5 minutes) which obviously means it's publicity machine has worked, but really as gamers are we really that shallow? and so bad with the opposite sex that we need to pay GameHookers to come and help us spend time with them?
The Poll has been split out by Gender to give an idea of how each has reacted. I have not seen the site properly but assume that there is no option currently to rent GameGigolos for the ladies to play with
I personally agree with a certain Mr Brahe Esq. [http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2010/3/31/] but What does the Escapist think?
GameCrush [http://prd.gamecrush.com/]
A couple of points. For one, are we absolutly sure the site crashed from overwhelming demand? I mean it could be a gimmick on their part to make people think there is a demand where there isn't one. It's also very possible that the site was crashed by Channers, Goons, or maybe even Anonymous even though we have not heard anything about a "raid" so far. I think back to auctions where the "Goatse" name/domain allegedly went for huge amounts of money but the bids were being put in falsely as a joke.
That said, I suppose it doesn't much matter. It's like an official alliance of Camwhores in spirit, with a central company playing the role of pimp. I find it offensive, but the same basic thing has been going on for a long while now, it just never had an official site/company behind it. I guess the idea is that instead of browsing the internets looking for girls who will flirt with you while playing games, you can just go to that site, and rather than guesswork about gifting her, you can pay a set rate.
I think it's kind of ridiculous though, because the games I play multiplayer are ones that wouldn't work in this context, and I prefer to play with friends (or to be honest as close to friends as people can get online) and people I meet through games while playing them.
Interestingly I can also see room for abuse here. There are already issues about people cheating with friends or guildies to earn achievements and accolades, or paying real money for in game benefits in games not set up for it (ie cash for gold, etc..). It makes me wonder if this service will also flourish as a way of duping, cheating on achievements, and other things, paying another player for assistance with professional anonimity. Viewed this way I wonder if online games and services like XBL will start banning people for a Gamecrush affiliation.
Ah well, time will tell. I don't see it affecting me much at all any way it goes.
