The FPS genre is an ongoing evolution that is only getting better. So modern FPS games are better than the heydays.

Greatest FPS games goes to the Modern Warfare series. Probably introduced many FPS haters to convert.

Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, System Shock, Unreal, Blood, even Terranova belong more on that list than half the aweful stuff that is on.

Aliens vs. Predator 2.
Or Team Fortress 2.
Or Portal.
Or Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Yes. Where is my "other" option?

What about Wolfenstein? Wasn't that the game that actually defined the genre?
It is.And I laugh at people why think that Doom came before.

OT:Well best can't really be defined.Seeing as how it differs from person to person.
But asking about favorite FPS is a whole different thing. My favorite one would be...Um...I guess I don't have a favorite one.It hardly have anything favoriteed.Seeing as how things I favor rapidly change. But that the moment it's TF2.Before that it was Killing Floor. And Day of Defeat came in there somewhere.

Maybe it doesn't count because it was an MMOFPS, but I had more fun with Planetside than with any of the games mentioned in the poll that I've played. The Halo games come in second.

Half Life 2 - although I love many of the above games, and I've probably spent longer playing the original Half Life, I gotta go with HL2.

I played through HL2 again recently and it's just such a refined game, I spot something new every time I play through it, mastering the gravity gun is so much fun, the different ways you can approach things, and a story reminiscent of things like 1984, V for Vendetta and Perdido Street Station amongst others which keeps you wanting to know more. (Probably keeps you wanting a little too much, perhaps, but there you go.) Plus, it still looks great.

What, no Quake?

I voted Deus Ex, and would have done no matter what, but Quake is badass. First truly 3D FPS, first one designed to support mod-makers from the outset. And hella fun. And the engine that spawned a thousand games (Hexen, Heretic, Team Fortress, Sin, Wolfenstein, CoD, CoD 2, CoD 4, CoD:MW, Half-Life, HL2, Portal and Doom 3 to name but a few). And it's now free software (GPL), which gets Brownie points in my book.

Unreal did well too, being the engine behind Deus Ex, R6:Vegas, Gears of War, Bioshock, Borderlands, Arkham Asylum, Splinter Cell and Mass Effect.

I went with Half life 2, but that's mostly because it's my favourite game and it's had an immeasurable impact on gaming (Most notably in the large number of hl2 mod games out there).

It's all opinion at the end of the day.

My personal opinion is that Halo set up a great template for console FPS games with a more simplistic approach that works well for a controller, though it inadvertently was carried over to PC fps games, where a bit more complexity is demanded from its market. Many will disagree with me, but that's my thoughts on the matter.

I also believe DOOM, is rather fun, but at the end of the day doesn't deserve its hype as much as what it receives as it's simply a Wolfenstein 3D mod.

Goldeneye 007, I think was a great template for split screen multiplayer FPS games on consoles and was a great building block for games like Timesplitters 2 and Future Perfect.

(From here on, I'm not going to bother to state it's my opinion, just have some common sense and assume as such, it's just easier that way)

Half-Life redefined story telling in FPS games, and in gaming in general by making it more interactive, and taking a subtle approach, rather than tonnes of dialogue and pre-rendered cutscenes. It also was a great example of a mature game that had a great atmosphere and didn't rely in simple blood/guts/gore.

Deus Ex, I can't really comment on without first hand experience, but from what I've heard and read, it did more for the RPG genre than the FPS genre, though combining the two really brought to light a new hybrid genre. Though I believe System Shock 2 did it first. All the same I hear it's a great game and I intend to play through it soonish.

Metroid Prime is more of a first person platformer really. The gaming mechanics for aiming and movement are so different from any other first person game before it. It was an interesting approach though.

Half-Life 2... yes it redefined gaming physics, but to be honest it just felt like a long tech demo from Valve of "hey look what we can do! oh by the way have you met Alyx Vance? have fun rule 34'ing her =D" followed by episodes of "hey Alyx is with you just about all the sodding time now! isn't that great? =D".

Bioshock. Fun game. Good story and atmosphere. Nice setting. The whole thing felt rather beautiful to me. In terms of gameplay, to me it was nothing new, but at the same time, that's kinda good in some ways. Better to redo good stuff that's been done than to innovate purely for the sake of innovation without thinking it through.

Also this poll seriously needs an "Other" option.
