Melee is the best. Brawl is too slowed down and simplified, and the N64 version, while good for its time, is too clumsy by my standards today.

I'd have to go with Melee. Most fun, and best characters. Why Young Link and Mewtwo had to be axed, I don't know. Who even likes Lucario or cel shaded Link?
They were just poor clones anyway, toon-link is different to Link and Lucario makes a more interesting and complex clone to Samus than Mewtwo did. As for who likes them? I adore toon-link, although Lucario isn't as badass as Mewtwo :(
How does Lucario make a more "interesting" clone?

I preferred Young Link to Toon Link, in both strength (Toon Link seems a lot weaker) and looks. Toon Link is just a Powerpuff girl.

My favorite was Melee. The original and Brawl were fun, but Melee improved on the original, and while Brawl also did the same, they took out a lot of the simplicity, and the fact that they slowed down the gameplay just can't be excused.

Brawl! Everything was better!

Say what you will about the character balancing in brawl, we didnt have nearly as many broken loops.

Melee. Purely because it was the first and only one of the SSB games i've played.

And it was amazing.

I think Brawl is better because the "clones" are more varied than they were in Melee. I mean, come on, Dr. Mario was just a re-skinned Mario with slightly higher damage!

Edit: Plus you can't wave-dash around like a dick.

Edit 2: But I suppose Melee had better stages. I really miss Poke-floats.

First off: Toon link is as cute as hell*. Young Link practically was normal Link Toon Link has different advantages in terms of speed and power. Lucario can counter, gets more powerful as more damage is inflicted upon him and generally plays differently to Samus. Fair enough Mewtwo wasn't a perfect clone either but, he was far too similar to Samus to argue in favour of Lucario, although I do miss the guy.

Melee. And well done to the people giving props to Jigglypuff. Jigglypuff is awesome and the character I play as the most...sing, rollout, pound and rest are all awesome moves when used correctly.

Uhhh... Toon Link is one of the top tier characters in Brawl.

Melee was easily the best. Brawl seems to be a much slower game to me.

Yeah, but Young Link filled the same niche. Toon Link just looks awful. Agreed on the speed though-Melee is far superior.

I loved the original when it released, but it's difficult to go back and play now -- can't stand the obvious polygons.

I have alot of memories of getting my butt kicked in Melee in both high school and college, so I'd say I have the most emotional connection to the game. But, Melee fell pretty flat if you didn't have a buddy to bash with at that moment, and playing as certain characters without any items on was a death sentence.

I chose Brawl. There are still balance issues to consider, but at least main stream characters like Kirby and Mario have a fighting chance. And with the Wi-Fi mode, I can jump on a get a beating when I'm craving it.

Melee, because I prefer the physics/character movement and general atmosphere (my term for things I'm too lazy to describe). Several aspects of Brawl also seemed kinda gimmicky, even for what is very much a party game.

Brawl. I loved all of them, but this was my favorite. All the characters and stages are excellent.
Agreed.
The characters they added all had great Pro's and Con's and i love that some of the other older characters had some of their moves re-worked and balanced out.
Plus, Norfair with the Golden Sun 2 Boss Battle Music.... my dream come true!
now in the next one we need Felix from Golden Sun 2 and Hector from Fire Emblem 7.

Brawl, because when the smash ball appears all hell breaks loose. and because there are trophies
