I generally prefer to play as a female character. Gaming treats men and women differently in regards to characterisation and abilities. While the generic Space Marine, heavy armour and weaponry archetype (something I find boring) is considered not simply an acceptable characterisation for male characters, but in fact a AAA title quality characterisation, developers are forced to develop female characters in new and more interesting ways. And, while I don't say no to having an attractive female avatar, it certainly is not a deciding factor in why I like playing female characters.
I agree with this one. A male character generally sticks to a theme, while females have room to manoevure. That's my experience anyway.

The only time i have issues playing as a girl is when there is a male character that is massively overpowered and generally out-competes the female character in all aspects of the game. If a developer is going to make a game with a mixed gender set of characters then there shouldn't be a clear boundry between the two characters, for example male character can have greater strength but female characters should have greater speed to even things out.

Doesn't bother me. If I have a char-building option in an RPG or something normally my combat class chars are guys and magic based are female.... normally coz I think the corrisponding armour suits those sexes best in most games like that.

I can't say I really mind that much, but I go for a male character whenever I can. Simply because I feel it allows me to get more immersed and in sync with the player character. But with stuff like Mass Effect, I almost always go through it atleast once as a female character, just to explore the different choices.

[sup]And because I really wanted to get jiggy with Garrus.[/sup]

No, I don't care.

It's funny that playing as a female character was thought of a few years ago as some really liberating move for the depiction of women, despite the first real female playable character of the modern era was the highly sexualised Lara Croft.

And things haven't moved on insofar as women always tend to be sex objects, even when the plot doesn't really require it (the girl in "Heavy Rain") so I don't really understand how female characters in games are in any way really interesting, or how it's even noteworthy having them as playable characters..

If I'm playing a game alone, i tend to play as a female character. However in games where I team up with my wife (such as WOW) we tend to make our characters match our RL genders.

Oh, of course it does. If you're a guy and you play a female character, that makes you gay. Or a girl. You'll be playing, and your junk will spontaneously retract into your body with this sort of ka-THUNK! sound, and then you're all like, "weird, was that vagina always down there and I just didn't notice until now?"

Seriously, I'm pretty sure I've seen this in medical journals.

Nope. Gender doesn't matter in the slightest. It all depends if the game is good.
Not much else I can say, really. In a game, I control a walking death-machine. Gender means nothing.
Especially in games like Metroid. Heck, I didn't even KNOW Samus was a chick.
you don't visit dA, do you.

OT: no, I don't care. in Fallout I took a female character, and only the sound she makes when hit annoyed me a little.

i don't really mind, but if i could choose it would be male.
it comes natural for me to choose my own sex.

i find people who are a different sex in mmorpg's scary.

Nah, a female character in Saints Row 2 made the game much more fun for me.
I dunno, the voice actor was probably just good.
So, yeah, didn't bother me.

I can't say I really care. In Fallout 3, once you wear Power Armour, there's no difference between male and female characters anyway.

It really depends on the game.

if there is no gameplay consequences to picking either sex i simply pick whichever is the default. In rpgs however there are often consequences to being either female or male and therefore i make a point of trying both options.

I guess more often than not i start off with the male as my first play through generally consists of roleplaying myself which just isn't natural if a woman speaks the words. however the second playthrough often features a female protagonist merely in order to be a sensate and get both experiences.

so to sum up: depends on the game and the playthrough.
