I know my natural reaction would be to run away, but I'd be tempted to lick it in case it's a lemon granade.

If there was cover around, I would get behind that.

If it was an open area and hte grenade was right next to me, I would throw it and run.

If it was out of arm's reach, I would run really fast.

I do this in ALL games, and therefore in real life:

Even if I SEE the grenade, even if I know it won't explode for a few more seconds, I WILL, without fail, back into the nearest corner and make myself as small as possible whilst whimpering

Even if this means knowingly backing into the corner the grenade landed in, I will do it instinctivly.

I evidently come from a gene pool with little explosive-based weaponry survival skills

gimme a musket, though, and I'll kill the lot of ya

Science people! Think about it.

Kick it obviously, the distance between you and the grenade will increase in a much shorter amount of time, increasing the chances of survival if it still goes off too close to you.

As far as I know modern grenades run on a chemical fuse so there would be no danger in kicking it away and then starting to run away. So long as you were quick about noticing what it was in time.

Running away from grenade : +
Sending the grenade another direction : +
Doing both : ++

This guy's a hero
>when that happened to my friend when he was in iraq, he threw it into a dumpster. saved his and 2 other guys lives.

Next guy is a potential dick, but probably not - depends on why he was there
>Something similar happened to me once, I was at the dublin riots ...

And this guy is never ever ever going to design a hand grenade any soldier I know will be allowed to throw
>I'm pretty sure a grenade's lethal radius is further than one can throw, let alone run, so ...

The correct answer is jump on the grenade, positioning your body to absorb the shrapnel. If it blows you were dead anyway and that way your friends survive while you feel no pain. If it is a fake, dud or doesn't blow (more likely outside of a war zone) you are going to get laid and free beer every day for the rest of your life.

i think it should be like this.

Smartest Move: Run
Stupid move of desperation: try and throw it back
Idiotic move: kick it away
It varies depending on type, but hand grenades generally have a five second fuse and an effective radius (meaning it will likely score multiple hits on anything closer) of at least twenty meters. Can you run twenty meters from a dead stop in five seconds minus however long its been since the pin was pulled?

Your best option is to dive behind the nearest dense object and drop prone. With no cover you best bet is to kick the thing as hard as you can and then drop prone. Picking up and throwing the grenade should be used when you don't have enough wind up room for a kick. Running is suicide as theres no way you'll get outside it's lethal radius in time in addition to presenting it with a large target because you're on your feet.

*pushes the so much hated Sergeant on top of the grenade and claims afterwards that he sacrificed himself for the rest of the squad

Lol I love it. (note the quoted users display name)

I'd kick it and roll into a ditch, depending on how close it was. If it was a few feet away, sprint and drop, then roll into nearest ditch.

I would use my ninja powers and teleport away using my feet.

And by that I mean sprint in the opposite direction.

And by that I mean make a peanut butter sandwich. Mmmmmmm.

Give it to the nearest kid and say "it's a fun ball!"

But, seeing as that is not an option, I'd probably run or hide.

That depends. Am I wearing armour and a helmate? If so, I seem to remember that the Idea is to curl up with your helmate facing the grenade and you hands over your neck, so the shrapnel can't penitrate anything vital. If youre luckey. Perhaps. On a good day. In theory. Well, it's probably worth a shot.
