I can usually tell what kind of sense of humour they have
Max up there, doesn't have an openly funny avatar, so I'd doubt he was the kind of person who tells jokes all the time. Which he isn't

I tend to do that, but really I judge them from their posts.

I do me for example. My avatar says that I like Star Wars, The Simpsons, and Photoshop. But I like to also state that its supposed to show my sense of humor.

It's pretty non-complicated, for once.
I would get that if your avatar changed more often. I have seen two I think and both of them seemed to convey the same feelings.

Yeah definitely, I need to put a face to people to remember them. The avatar will do, but you can tell a lot about a person through the avatar.

When people look at mine, you can only really think, "She likes David Bowie."
I don´t think that.I think you like Ziggy but not Bowie.

Huh, surprising amount of hatred for Darkside and his avatar here. Oh well.

I used to judge people based on their avatars, but not so much now. I don't judge people much here and when I do, I give them time and the chance to prove me wrong. Besides, posts are a much more reliable way of finding out information about someone's personality that a 75x75 square. People could easily jump to false conclusions over it (as I have done so in the past) and an image is always open to interpretation, so not just is it depending on the image then, but also the person interpreting and analysing the image. My avatar could be seen as a perfect example, as I doubt people would assume a half-decent and intelligent poster to have such a weird and random avatar as mine. Posts, on the other hand, give an up-close and direct look at their opinionn and personality.

However, I do wonder occasionally what people think about Rorscach wearing shades and a top hat.

Like the one you had before of that friend of yours? Or was that for a different reason?

Back in March-May he was widely known for his sarcasm and comedy actually; it was one of his main claims to fame on The Escapist.

EDIT: But I do remember people more for their avatars than their usernames, or anything else about them.

I remember the guy with the antiobama avatar. I judged him, he was a dick though.
"Was?"
I thought he was still around.

Anyway, not usually, and I get annoyed when people do it to me.
I am not, nor have I ever been, emo.

So fuck you.
I just figured women with glowing eyes was your thing....... anywho, yes. Mainly those who have the BoS soldier. Sorry if you have it but come on, every newcomer has it.
I was thinking that too, along with the Zero Punctuation avatar, except for Trivun and SSGT Splatter, they've been here long enough that I don't need to make avy-based-judgments anymore.

Yes, but only Vrex360. I take it that he rather likes Elites?
More, he's our resident (self admitted) Halo fanboy. Nothing wrong with that though. And yes, he does also like Elites. Personally, I'd have chosen as specific one, like Half-Jaw or the Arby, but whatever.

Mostly no, if it's a gaming or pop culture based avatar that is ultimatley not confronting or generaly neutral then I have no problem with it. If someone has an avatar that descends from say Firefly then it merely says that they liked Firefly. I mean my avatar says quite clearly that I am a fan of Halo and of the elites but it isn't confronting (except for the obvious confrontation of gazing into the face of the holy Sangheili) and so it's more of an expression of what one likes and in a sense a definition of who we are.

Then again I remember joobnook47... the first (or second) incarnation of the resident troll had that avatar of Gordon Freeman killing Masterchief and I was not in the least bit surprised to find him as an endlessly annoying Halo Hating Troll. So yeah, he was a guy I hated flat out mostly because he openly insulted me and quite a few others based on our mutual like for Halo.
Although you were obviously correct in that assumption, you shouldn't assume that. I mean, a picture I've seen (which will probably be my next avy momentarily, assuming it ends up looking okay at such a small size, it's originally a Wallpaper) was of Sam Fisher killing Gordon Freeman, and I love that picture despite my love for Half Life.

I'm fairly new around here but I've seen you around. Your avatar is actually quite striking so it sticks in my memory. I also then noticed the number of posts that you've amassed and assume that you've been with the Escapist for quite some time. Also noticed, in that vein, that people seem to know you as, it was noted somewhere that you had used an emoticon (which didn't fit your regular MO).
Actually, he's been with the Escapist a relatively short time, he just posts a lot. I mean, using myself as an example, he's been here half as long as me and has twice as many posts, and I post frequently.

But not....I've forgotten the word, it's a kind of humour. Like dark humour and such.

Black comedy? [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_comedy] Probably the closest I can think of to that description. If you mean that's Max's style, you're probably right about it, but I'm not that experienced in black comedy so I may not know.

I can't say what I base my judging on, but yeah, I do...well, I don't necessarily judge people, I judge their avatars only.

I do judge a person if they have a motivational poster as an avatar. I don't really like those.

No, I usually don't look at screen names or avatars. I just go through the threads and read the comments. I'm not trying to be unpersonable or anything, I just am terrible with remembering people as it is.

I usually think of the person as what's in their avatar. It's just how forums work to me.

I sometimes do, not very often though.

Usually I remember people by their icons so I try not to change mine. But I fail'd and changed from a Bullshit Button to a Little Boots icon, but I don't mind because she is fucking awesome.
