I'm not a fan of most Anime or Manga unless it involves tits. Most Asian cartoons with plot involve some young man that must undertake responsibility beyond their years and battle some great evil that will be replaced by an even greater, evil-er evil on the next season. How does this young man take on these issues? By screaming at the top of his lungs and unleashing some hidden power from within that could confused for a massive shit. Of course, this is sprinkled with some humor that comes from a female opposite, who will have an unnumbered amount of spin-off mangas, that I'll be "reading."

That's not to mean I hate these mediums. I like some of Miyazaki's work, and Akira was alright if not pretty to look at. So, I guess anime movies take the win for being the least ridiculous.

Double-check: what you've been reading could be Manhwa, the Korean variant! Manhwa follows the left-to-right format.

Also, from what I've read of DH's titles, they don't flip the manga: they certainly didn't for Gantz.
Dark Horse printed their translation of Blade of the Immortal that way because they started that series in 1997 (I think), and at that time, manga hasn't really taken off in the West (most manga at the time were mirrored), so they painstakingly cut and paste each and every panel of the manga to make it read from left to right, only mirroring the image when it's impossible to cut and paste (explains why sometimes, Manji's scar is on his right eye, instead of the left and vice-versa). This was done as a request by the author to keep the "integrity" of the art. They kept at it for ten years. Luckily for them, Hiroaki Samura almost always had rectangular panels.

I like both, but I tend to go read more Manga than watch anime. Especially since one of my favorite series is still only in Manga form (that is, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure). The anime adaptations (of the third and first parts of the manga) don't count! Longest-running manga without an anime adaptation. That, and the inherent awesomeness that is Berserk. There is a level of greatness in Berserk's art that probably can't be captured by anime (much like Blade of the Immortal's).

It depends: when the story is more action-based (a la Naruto, Bleach, Tengan Toppa Gurren Lagaan, etc) I prefer anime, since action is better represented. With more story based tales, I prefer manga since it feels better for some unidentifiable reason.

To me it seems like you're just not reading the right manga or watching the right anime. I want to give you elfen lied as an example but it involves boobs ( mostly for symbolism and a point, not for boners). So I'll go with the anime in my avvy. Hellsing ultimate, it's not a boy doing something beyond his years because the main character is hundreds of years old, the great evil is nazi vampires so I doubt it's gonna get much eviler, and his powers don't involve screaming, so THAR.

I figured I'd get a response such as yours. My statement was generalization of popular anime, like Naruto, that's viewed by preteens and sadly, some people I know. It was a cycled joke attempt; I started with tits and ended with masturbation.

I was once a rabbid fan of DragonBall and its zeta version but eventually grew out of it; that show never ended. I'm also not much for watching a series with plots expanding longer than two episodes, with the exception of Arrested Development.

What I'm getting at goes beyond anime, manga, and comic books. Many series, for the most part suck because creativity has been stretched thin to allow a long-running profit. That's why I enjoy sweet-condensed movies and games. What I stated doesn't go without its exceptions; there are plenty of lengthy source materials that get butchered rather than sweetly condensed. All that and I'm not a fan of the "sexy" filler Japan calls humor.

I think both equal each other out when their differences are balanced, given of course that the examples of both are good. Anime gives you color, voices, and clarity as to what is going on when you can't tell what happened in the manga. Manga let's you establish the pace of the story and identify your own voices with the characters.

If you're not clear on what I mean above, read this:

I'll use Hellsing as an example, which is both an excellent anime (the Ultimate series, anyway) and manga. I love the Hellsing manga because it was very fast-paced in difference to the anime, which is because I read quickly. Reading the manga quickly gives the impression of speed that the animation didn't quite match, as I imagined certain scenes happening quicker.

I love the anime because I get to see what actually happened at certain points. Clarity is an issue when reading a manga because there's only so much motion that can be expressed by still images. It's also nice to get good voice acting, which provides the inflections necessary to pick up on the more subtle aspects of the dialogue.

You should never judge a genre by what is most popular, especially if what is most popular is new and thus likely a fad.

You don't like shows with plots that are longer then two episodes? Most movies take less time then two anime episodes. an anime episode without commercials normally lasts 22 minutes, so two would be 44 minutes. I'm normally not one for relatively slow pacing..but..really...44 minutes?

Sturgeon's law my good friend , 90% of it is going to be crap. Some of the crap used to be sweet chocolate that has been abused by a cruel digestive system trying to absorb every last nutrient from it , some of the crap is MCdonalds and has always been crap, some of the crap is MCdonalds that has been abused by a cruel digestive system trying to absorb every last nutrient from it, and some of the crap is crap because the food is nowhere near as good as people say it is, and it will likely be put through a digestive system because of it.....and that analogy sucks.

I can't tell if that complaint is about filler or fanservice, but either way , a ton of anime fans hate those too. Although I do think in the right anime they could be good. An anime that's basically porn should have fanservice. An anime that's pointless (like I hear lucky star is) should have filler

Meh, well everyone I know (online, since no one I know IRL would openly admit to watching an anime about highschool girls that look 8) acts like it's a show about nothing or one that's just a string of parodies and randomness. I never actually saw it, but the one anime reviewer in the world who isn't banned from youtube and seems to have similar or the same reactions to animes as I do seems to think it's about nothing so I probably would too.

Cute site btw ;)

I haven't read many manga, but I've watched quite a few anime series in my time. It's easier for me to get into anime than manga (even though I'm an avid reader), but I suppose that they both have their strengths. I haven't watched much anime in a while, though.

*files link away for future shenanigans*

...Uh, what was I doing? Yeah. Lucky Star has niche appeal and all that. It's interesting, though it certainly isn't for everyone.

It's a slice-of-life comedy spiced with liberal amounts of otaku humor, and is pretty much the antithesis of action...in other words, it's a animated yonkoma (like Azumanga Daioh). You're probably right.

Cute site btw ;)
Oh good. I wasn't sure if it had overstayed its welcome on the Escapist...or if it's been used at all, really.

A show based around comedy...yea it served my purposes fair enough. A show where I'd find filler to be a good thing or at least not inheritly bad.

I'm not active enough here to know , but that's the first time I saw it.

i read manga to get ahead, i absolutely hate filler arcs.

but with anime it's nice to hear voice-actors, if they're good, and action scenes are definitely easier to understand when animated.

but i like the artwork in manga, they seem to try a bit harder.

though i will agree with the OP, ghost in the shell is an awesome anime. probably my favorite. <3

Often times it is a case of "first come first served". If someone reads the manga, then sees the anime, they are going to notice all of the differences and flaws. If someone sees the anime before reading the manga, they are going to notice all of the differences and flaws. This is the same reason some people don't like sequels to games, but people who play a game, then go back and play the original don't like it as much. It's all about what you are use to.

Personally, reading 2000 pages of a manga is a lot harder than watching one and a half seasons of an anime, but both have their ups and downs.

I think I'm steering way off topic, but this is an interesting exchange of words nonetheless. I tend to generalize a lot to avoid discussion but it usually brings misinterpretation. I'll try to tackle your second and fourth paragraph at once. I could easily tolerate, no enjoy, a short series if that's what was intended, like the nonsensical FLCL or the suspenseful Prisonbreak. Differences besides the obvious? One show continued on for fanservice/profit. Prisonbreak at the beginning was clearly advertised as miniseries, what happened? It was awesome, so they extended it and turned it to mindless garbage.

Manga/Anime, no, most series of anything do this; maybe the author of these things actually planned for a long running series, but I'm very doubtful. While I don't watch much TV anymore, I can sit through an episode of Seinfeld, which is like an tightly-knit skit that expands for a good twenty minutes, nothing more.

On topic, I say anime movies are the best choice because they can only fit the best of the best into two hours. There are exceptions.

By the way I used "..." to shorten posts.
