If you replace the words "force" with "mass effect field" and "midichlorians" with "element zero/mass effect core", you can turn Star Wars into Mass Effect.

All we need is a beam sword made out of mass effect fields and the cloning process is complete.

I have to say Mass Effect, because I like the setting a lot more. Although Baldur's Gate II trumps both of them.

KoToR is a better Star Wars sequel than anything after RotJ, so it holds a special place in my geek heart. That said, Mass Effect, particularly ME2 is a more polished game. Never replayed KoToR (and never got 2), played both MEs...an embarassing number of times.

Gotta go with Mass Effect because of the new universe. I had already seen all that there was to see in Star Wars, but everything in Mass Effect was new and strange. Also, KOTOR 2....eh, so much badness.

P.S. Can someone please tell me how KOTOR 2 ended? I finished it, but I don't really feel like the story was over. Maybe I missed something.
KoToR 2 ended at Malacor. the game was not finished. I know how you feel. the game felt really deep in the beginning and middle, then you just kind of kill 2 sith lords like little kittens and have an argument that REALLY didn't clear much up for me with Ka...whatever the fuck her name was.
see. when I can't remember the characters I know the game wasn't that drawing.

On another note,

Who want's to help me solved the case, codenamed: EDNESEN (DUN, DUN, DUN!!!)
Our Lord Inglip has commanded us to solve the riddle of Ednesen. It shall be done.

OT: I have to say I enjoyed Mass Effect more than KOTOR. I found that the combat, the characters and the environments were much better.

I have played all 4 games multiple times, invested hundreds of hours in all of them because they are superior games. But........ME gets edge because of SWTOR being made into a MMORPG, the fuckers, they give the series back to Bioware and they make a MMORPG.....-anger-

The kinda copped out with the ending of Sith Lords...Basically the Exile get her palmed read by Kreia. And The Exile takes the Ebon Hawk goes to the Outer Rim in search of Revan and presumably finds him, horrible flat ending.

Does anyone else think KotOR was Mass Effects mother? Same developer, interestingly similar setting. BioWare has made their own Star Wars Universe! It's important to be new and innovative but how new and innovative WAS it?
No, they reskinned Star Trek. Don't think so? Think Bioware doesn't know what they did?
1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogxWHHOmFrQ
"This is... It's green." Classic Star Trek reference line. When there's a drink offered, and it's alien, the description will be "What is it? Well it's... It's... It's green."
2. They got the guy who played Warf to voice the leader of the antagonistic clan on Tuchanka (the guy Shep head-butts). A major member of the krogan, a race very similar in tradition and ideology to the klingons.
-Bioware knows Mass Effect is incredibly derivative. Incredibly derivative. But they embrace that and make a universe that's (though no where near as scientific) a great game with a great cast and pretty good voice actors. Plus, you know... Tali and Garrus ~<3

That being said, I never played KotOR so you could be right in how it's the mother of ME. Hell, you probably are! But I'll go with ME because, as derivative as it is, it's still an original world, and I prefer that to what could be one of the greatest fan fictions of all time for all I know. Maybe if I played KotOR I'd be singing a different tune.

Most of Biowares games are incredibly similar. And I prefer ME to KOTOR, couldn't stand the latter.
I have to say that I love KotOR and its one of my favorite games of last generation. I do prefer ME because it shows how much the developer has grown since KotOR and I fucking hate bioware for the choice near the end that came out of left field and I did not expect it in the least bit.

It's like George Lucas, instead of finishing the original trilogy with ROTJ (my personal favourite of the original three), instead choosing to make an ongoing Reality TV program (subscription based), set 300 years after the fall of the Empire, with just one episode dedicated to explaining just how Luke, Leia and Chewie rescued Han, redeemed Vader, and managed to destroy the Emperor.
....Yeah, I can see that happening in the future. Lucas would put it as a comedy and make it "meta and self-referential". Don't give the old money grubber any more ideas!

Yes, KotOR was ME's mother, and yes, KotOR was an awesome game (although I'm one of the minority who also really loved KotOR 2).

But what tilts the balance on favour of ME for me is that I'm impressed that they've put so much effort into developing their own IP. To start a new and original sci-fi saga with the depth of ME is astounding; I haven't seen another studio do that sort of thing so well.

I liked both KotOR and Mass Effect. It was initially difficult for me to play ME, having gotten so used to KotOR's system. Nonetheless, I still lean perhaps just a bit towards ME. Great characters, good dialogue, awesome powers and great fights still couldn't let me forget how tired I was of Star Wars by the time I played KotOR.

....... damn it lets just dive in head first.
Mass Effect is amazing
Kotor is amazingly superb
Kotor wins by default only because it took what was essentially a large universe and cranked out two games that re-difined that universe and made jaded star wars fans rekindle their love with the lightsabers, jedi's, and fucking SITH LORDS!

kotor > ME by a lot

ME really is just the star wars universe with the serial numbers filed off

ME2 took all of the character building choices of "rpg" and turned it into an fps, the combat was insipidly boring to the point where I looked for game mods that would let me skip it

however the conversation system and the paragon/renegade quicktime system was brilliant

The most innovative thing to come out of me2 was that you could advance as BOTH paragon AND renegade at the same time. That was you could really roleplay how you felt the character would react without being penalized in game stats like you are in most "morality" system games.

KOTOR saved RPGs in the 00s just like Baldurs Gate did in the 90s. It is also one of the few shining stars in the crapsack that is the Star Wars extended universe.
