Why the hellsballs was I put into a general education class when I am supposed to be in a private population class? It is very lonely in there, considering the only other leadership student in there is a new one.. My science class is a constant distraction because normal high school students are fucking idiots and won't shut the hell up.

This is just a minor annoyance, generally my high school classes are awesome. And, I tend to side on about the required history.. Because those whom don't know the past, as cliche as this is, are doomed to repeat it.

Actually, we're both wrong.

The most correct way to have phrased those sentences would likely be as follows: I plan to put my education to fantastic use, namely, making me lots of money.

Well, that's to my preference of wording, but you get the gist.

I made it a separate sentence to formulate some kind of emphasis, which was quite silly indeed since I had corrected you on your grammar. It's simply how I would have spoken it I suppose.

I should also add that I don't think the American school system is exactly great. 'Tis not my point at all. My point is simply to stress the importance of not complaining about things that are 'facts of life', or that you don't bother to try and change. More importantly, I'm trying to push the importance of self-education, because sometimes our educational system is lacking. I didn't have a decent English class until 4th grade when I was put into the 'Gifted' program [gag], but I was well above my writing & reading level for my age by that time. My parents insisted I read, taught me early, and it soon became a passion of mine. I don't speak well because I've taken numerous English classes [only just finished High School two years ago], or because I've ever taken a writing class. It's because I read.

The moral of my story can be summarized by this example: Say you don't understand a certain lesson in Algebra. Do you say 'fuck it', drop the class / fail out, or do you try and learn it at home through your own methods? Maybe your teacher didn't explain it very well, but that doesn't mean you abandon the system completely. Work through it.

Not to mention, you have to consider yourself lucky to even have free public schools [if in fact, you do], or a decent educational system period. A lot of people are not quite so lucky.

And you're right, I am a bit of a douchebag, aren't I? I suppose I owe you an apology, as clearly you didn't deserve my hostility / mockery. I'm a full supporter of rational, reasonable discussions, and making jabs is certainly not the way to do it.

If I may throw an excuse your way, I haven't had the best of weeks, and my common courtesy has somewhat downgraded due to it. I shall attempt to rectify the situation.

Allright well thank you. I understand what you are saying and yeah I guess I was a little bitchy. I'm not ever going to drop out, and you did have a good point, I should probobly try to talk to the shool board about the class selection.

I went to a Catholic high school and for a week in science class they had to talk about how religion could/couldn't be compared with science. Talk about not syncing up, even the teacher knew that the lesson plan was BS. Yay for Kansas!

In art, writing and music classes throughout school, I was told to express individuality and creativity. Meanwhile, in every other class, they penalized creativity and individuality and punished you for it.

Yeah, you can tell from those two statements alone that I did well in English and horrible in Math.

One cant really be creative in math, science, and history, mostly becuase those are definate facts. 2+2 is always 4, hydrogen always has one proton, George Washington was always the first president. There not much room for creativity.

I have to say though, to the number of people claiming the english in usless because of thier interest in science or tech fields I feel inclined to state that an eloquent tounge can get an individual alot, including those all so important grants and funding.

My problem is when we have to take classes that will NOT help us in the future.
This is one of the biggest problem with the American education system. Students that can not get out of the mentality that what they are learning will not help them in the future.
I agree, it's not always WHAT you're learning that's important. It's being able to think about things from multiple angles.

That's why a writer is forced to take math classes or vice versa.

You wanna know why there isn't any reality in the classroom. Because schools hire a bunch of fucked up people who have lost any dreams they did have and shouldn't or aren't able to breed, and they know it. So they go through their lives torturing student do they don't quite feel bad when they go home to their shitty, little apartment at night to grade papers. Almost everyone of the teachers I have right now are like that. I know three are like that for sure.
Wow! As a teacher myself, I find this incredible offensive, and not even remotely true! Is there a story behind the bug up your ass?

I think theres one thing not a lot of people consider. How does a person become a teacher?

12 years in basic, then 4 years in college, then 4 years in graduate school, then after 20 years in school, you're qualified to go back to school! After you've taught 1-5th grad for 10 or so years you can maybe become a highschool teacher.

Teachers can spend literally 30 years teaching and being taught just to get to highschool. You can almost understand why they get pissed when a 16 year old shows 'em up. You can also see why they aren't hung up on everything they teach being applicable to reality. What reality have they seen? They never leave school. When they're done being taught they start teaching. These people will always have a summer vacation. Not having one would be alien and weird. From their perspective school is reality and therefore what they teach you is by definition applicable.

... I think this says something deep and profound about the American education system and the sort of personality that would live the life of a teacher and, hence, be teaching your children. Problem is, I'm kind of tired and don't really know what the profound lesson to pull from this is.

Ah well. I'll think about it more in the morning.

You're a teacher? "Kill it with fire!"

It's odd when you see a teacher out of school. We know you have lives and everything, but we never think of you that way. On some level I always thought you all lived inside the school basement in coffins. I've noticed that very few teachers have garlic for lunch...

Okay, now that's pretty funny. No, I drink, I swear, I mastur . . . whatever, just like everybody else. Oh, and teachers talk to each other outside of class. We ALL know who the little shits in the school are. So watch your backs.

Okay, I'll bite. Here's my little subversion on the standard bitching that's come up thus far.

English class, high school. We've been tasked with writing a poem about the subject of our choice. Poetry just happens to be something I excel at. It also happens to be something I loathe doing. I believe that loathing led me to my topic: calling out the school system for the bullshit it is.

For those of you who insist the school system does indeed prepare you for the real world, I've spent many a year in the real world, and outside of the absolute basics of grammar and mathematics, I can almost certainly say the only use for my 12 years of public education are only useful for game shows hosted by Jeff Foxworthy.

Segueing back to the topic at hand, the teacher believed beautifully written (which it was), and submitted it to some new school magazine started just that year to highlight the student body's artistic ability, whether it be the written word or just pretty pictures. If that sounds as vague as I think it does, that's because I never heard about the damned thing until many months later when I'm told I've won some sort of award for my piece (along with 11 other people, one from each grade in town) and get to read it on the local cable station virtually no one has. Um, yay?

Now, I didn't expect to change anything or light the world on fire with my piece, in fact I rather expected to forget the whole thing. And I did. But when I complain about something and get rewarded by the very thing I'm complaining about, for my complaint no less, the mind boggles.

Uh, I had 12 years grade school. 5 years of college. And that's it. Under 20 and I have my license. Oh, and I teach everything K-12, going between elementary and high school daily. Oh, and during the summer and weekends, I work retail in the real world. I don't know where you get your information. Just surmising probably.

It would be weird not having the summer off though.

In school, you're told to sit down, shut up, and do what you're told. In the real world, people who do that rarely do more than scrape by. Why is it that school is penalizing us for wanting to succeed?
Wrong. So wrong. Doing what you're told is a rather essential part of life. I'm not saying you'll get nowhere by being disrespectful and disobedient, but you will find it harder to hold down a job.

I'm not suggesting you be a doormat for anyone at any time, but when you go to work somewhere you don't tell your boss that they're running their business wrong. The same goes for school teachers.
Obviously some of the examples you gave are a bit extreme and deserve outcries, but for the most part, sitting down and shutting up is how you go far in life, until you get into a position where you can afford to be outspoken.

The scariest thing I've ever seen on the Escapist.

A teacher talking shit about kids. I've always said that the school system was full of shit, but I mostly blamed it on the students. I guess I forgot that when you're in school, most of the teachers are assholes who couldn't get better jobs.

I know exactly what you mean. It's been the same handful of people for the last six years and at this point every time they do something I want to kick them in the shin until they fall over and start bleeding.

Whoa, whoa. People have called me an asshole before (and I can't always correct them on this) but I teach because it allows me to do what I love doing, not because there aren't other jobs. I get to work with students in music and work with them to learn how to create better music.

I went to one of the schools that apparently believes all of its students have mental disabilities and forces them to write a letter about their goals to the teacher every bloody year. I was actually complimented for having a unique letter. I said that my goal was to be Batman. While the people in charge seem to think that they have a grand army and are actually leading a quest for world domination, some of the teachers could be great.
I had to do one of those, too. I told her that I plan to bring a pillow and blanket to school one day and sleep.

She actually let me do it the last day of the semester.

Well then I commend you, sir. I actually want to be a World History teacher because that was one of the subjects that actually interested me in school and I loved studying it.
