WOLFENSTEIN
Q: What game popularised and defined the First Person shooter?
A: WOLFENSTEIN

All other shooters build on it's foundations, so there is no other answer.

Doom defined the FPS, Half Life defined the modern FPS, Halo defined the shitty FPS, and Counter Strike defined the multiplayer FPS.

If it has to be a single game, it would be Wolfenstein 3D. Every other FPS, including Doom, Half-Life and Halo owns to it the entire genre.

Wolfenstein 3D was the first FPS game, how in the holy hell did you ignore it?

Wolfenstein 3D is my pick, it FORGED THE DAMN GENRE.

Doom. Its one of the fist FPSs and arguably the best one of that time period. And had the first silent protagonist.
And after a long time, it's still going and its FUN!

I agree with Wofenstein 3D because it's one of the first but I do have to admit that DOOM is probably more responsible for bringing the FPS into the mainstream gaming scene.

I also would nominate Half-Life for being the most terrible game that ever existed in the FPS world. Yes, Serious Sam and Rise of the Triad are superior games to Half-Life 1-2.

Wofenstein 3D was not "one of the first" it was the first.
You owe the entire FPS genre to this game.

Goldeneye...

Doom to me is like the missing link between the old-style dungeon crawler and the modern FPS. Not quite evolved to be called a First-Person Shooter, or to define it.
I agree about Doom, but if you're talking about which game was the first to define what we now recognise as the FPS, it has to be Quake. It predated Goldeneye by a year, it was the first truly 3D FPS, the first one that could be played over the Internet, and the first one to intentionally support modding. It was the engine that spawned a thousand games; there is still code from its engine in HL2 and CoD4.

Goldeneye is still an underrated gem, though. I think it had some kind of stealth gameplay, and it challenges Half-Life for the title of defining the plot-driven FPS.

Wolfenstein 3D didn't define the genre, it was the kick-off.
DooM didn't define it either, it just set the standard.

I think it's Half-life that very, very subtly defined the genre. Few people realise how influential a game it was, even if it was pretty boring at times. You can tell just by looking at the huge masses of third-party mods that use the same engine, the same AI, the same interface (mostly)... yeah.
That might sound a bit fanboyish, but I thought Half-life in itself wasn't that amazing. It was just really fucking influential.

So it gets my vote.

EDIT: Oh dear, I forgot QUAKE. Half-life actually used a heavily modded Quake engine.
QUAKE gets my actua vote.

Ooo, interesting fact. Wolfenstein 3D wasn't the first FPS ever, it was the first one released. id had made an FPS just before it, can't remember the name. Look that up.

What defined it? People. Primarily with their reaction to them. Otherwise, it is just a disc.

Oh you want a specified game?

NO! you get 3.

Birthed it? Doom. Enough said.

Defined it? Halo (specifically 2 when console multiplayer became widespread and increased the popularity of shooters across the board)

Redefined it? Bioshock. Proper shooter with hybrid elements of RPGs with in depth and cohesive story and char building it has advanced the genera as a whole, because some people who wont play a shooter, will play bioshock willingly.

EDIT: you could argue that Kill.Switch redefined it, with the advent of the cover system, or gears of war with perhaps the fluidity and need to utilize the cover system. I personally wouldnt, but it is a valid argument.
Birthed it? As you say, yes DOOM, Heretic, Hexen, withe the later 2 beeing "doom clones" in duisguise.
Defined it? not Halo, sorry. The only thing Halo had, what others had not was well functioning vehicles. The rest could have been a little more sci-fi Halflife.
I like it, but it didnt reinvent the wheel.

redifined it? nothing, and a lot of stuff. Bioshock sure was good, but the fitting rpg elements arent new. Deus Ex, Tron 2.0 had it. Both great games.
