I would say go Daemonhunters, as the more of us we can get the sooner we can get a new codex, but for a newcomer they are a nightmare. Hardly any models, hard to paint and expensive. You would be better of with Tau or Guard. However you may find the Tau a bit difficult to use at the start, but thats not the point, the point is you get battle suits which are cool.

Of course you could always go for a combined IG/Daeminhunters force. That is perfectly legal.
Then you can get these.

Oh yeah, theres a good way to add CQC to your guard.

Too expensive. I use Grey Knights in my IG army, but I prefer their power-armour brethren. A six-man squad with an Incinerator. Can't go wrong.

Absolutelly. There are rules especially designed for 400pt skirmishes.

http://www.patrolclash.org.uk/patrolclash1.htm

But hey, like the rule book says, the most important thing is to have fun. If you want to pit one single squad against another in the floor of your bedroom, no reason you can't do it. My girlfriend and I bend the rules all the time simply to fine-tune some aspects of our main force.

Also, I don't have a lot of money, but most of my current forces weren't bought, they were traded. Within our community, I simply found players with stuff they wanted to get rid off, and traded them forces from other game systems, boardgames, or just bought them second hand for much reduced prices. Then it's simply a simple matter of re-assembling and painting them to your taste.
that alone has set me go ahead and start warhammer up, but IG seems to my pick because of the fact i can add in the DH and even some other chapters in as well

Thats true, i just know the guy who plays that tactic often plays apocalypse games so he has allot of point to throw around. That and they look cool.

You mean Vostroyans? ;)

They're ok, but my personal favourites are the Armaggeddon Steel Legion.

I am sad you didn't mention Necrons, but of the three choices I would go with Tau

Sorry my bad. I have terrible spelling and for some reason I always used to pronounce them 'Voy-strens' I just love the whole Imperial British look - spiffing jackets and fine 'taches. They seem the kind of people who would go to war and then have a jolly good talk about it afterwards with some brandy whilst listening to a gramaphone. After battle tea and medals, you can't beat it.

The Vostroyans are inspired by Napoleonic-era Russians, but for what you describe, you have the Praetorians.

These guys:

Those are only two.

You have the Vostroyans (Napoleonic Russians), the Praetorians (british colonial troops), the Mordians (US Marine dress uniforms), the Catachans (Rambo look-alikes), the Cadians (generic future soldiers), the Valhalans (WWII russians), the Tallarn (desert troops), the Steel Legion (WWII germans) and more, not to mention Forge World resin armies, like the Death Korps (WWI trench warfare germans) and the Elisians (paratroopers).

The ones that are easier to get, and cheaper, are the Cadians and the Catachans. They are the most popular choices. However, since I've been playing for a long time, I mix and match different regiments to fit my fluff.

Cadians

Catachans

Games workshop doesnt have vahalla IG makes me sad
It should be in the Collector's area of their online store. If not, then it's gone. They are 2nd ed. minis after all.
