Wait, why does it have to be British?

Because there's plenty of good reaons for choosing a comedy other than that it's British.

Like y'know, it being funny.
most non-british comedy shows are terrible, but that's just my opinion

Monkey Dust was awesome, the 2nd and 3rd series will never be released on DVD because the creator died and his widow (who holds the rights) didn't approve but it's not hard to find on YouTube etc.

Brasseye

That Mitchell & Webb Look

Peep Show

Armstrong & Miller

Red Dwarf was good up until about S7 but then the budget got bigger than the comedy writer's talent...

Black Books

Green Wing

Spaced

Mock the Week and Newswipe are both good topical shows... as was Spitting Image in its day.

I'm not a huge fan of Ricky Gervais as I find his stuff a bit cringe-worthy...

Standup: Russell Howard, Frankie Boyle, Omid Djalili (who also has his own sketch show) Josie Long is quite good (and a friend of mine).

Honourable mentions to Dara O'Briain and Andrew Maxwell (both Irish but lived in England a long time and do a lot of English gigs & TV shows).

Blackadder is a must, My Family, Monty Python, Anything with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in, Allo Allo, Morcumbbe and Wise (proper good oldies), the Carry On films, the IT Crowd, Peep Show, Being Human (dark supernatural, but still kinda funny), Two Pints of Lager and a Pack of Crisps, Something called Growing Up I think, A Bit of Fry and Laurie (or Laurie and Fry, I forget), QI and Have I Got News For You (for intelligent and political satire), Gavin and Stacy, Monkey Dust (for some really dark humour), as for comedians to watch - Ed Byrne, Rod Gilbert, Billy Conelly, Dara O'Brien, Russell Howard - and I hope this helps you...

What? No love for Monty Pythons Flying Circus? Bah, kids these days.
You can't forget Monty Python, but I think Search for the Holy Grail is by far the best.

Peep Show is probably my favourite comedy of the millennium so far.

Also, try some panel shows, QI, Would I Lie to You, You Have Been Watching, Mock the Week, check out YouTube. And anything with David Mitchell, aka the funniest man alive if John Cleese was dead.

If you think any of those are emo masturbation material you clearly haven't seen them...or don't understand them. Same difference.

Anything by Monty Python, Chelmsford 123, Asylum (Julian Barratt, Simon Pegg, Norman Lovett), We are Klang, The Mitchell and Webb Show. I guess there are quite a few more but too many to list.
