PREACH IT!!!!
Manga is evil?
no, nothing good ever comes out of forcing a religion onto a person.
i am a christian and i love it when o hear of a person accepting Jesus.
But its not my job to force them too.
She should just ask for her child not to have access to the stuff. (i feel so bad for him/her.)

off topic.
Your school lets you play games!?!?
thats awesome, the pass to play games is a pretty cool idea too, we played all the time in my Webmastering and Digital Graphics class in high school but it would of been nice not to haft to minimize the screen to about a 1/10 it original size so we wouldent get caught.

Eh, if they managed to instill "killing is bad", they did their job.

Wow... does the list of people saying or doing stupid things in the name of God never end? God TOLD HER to blah blah yadda yadda yadda?

To quote one of my favorite fictional characters:
"God TOLD him?? [...] If you talk to God you're religious; if God talks to you... you're psychotic."

- Religious extremist

I'm in a bit of a pickle. In my high school, we are allowed to download and play games, borrow comics (Japanese and American alike) from the library, and do whatever during free time. It rocks, somewhat. But out of the blue (or maybe there was a build up I'm not sure), a parent decided that she should throw her beliefs all over the school. She's trying to get all the comics out of the library because of references to Satanism and evil and ooh scary stuff, and delete all the games (a lot of computers have steam for gaming during free breaks. you need a special pass though) because guns were created by the devil or something.

Now, i'm all for freedom of speech or the right to believe anything you want, but when you think that God told you himself that you should save this school for the evils of entertainment (or should I say enterTAINTment) then you've got to be a little loony. And yes, folks, she did say that. Here are some quotes from her letter the teacher sent out, its part of a 'parents speak' section in the newsletter:

"Kids these days are being controlled by the evil that is contained within the manga and comics. I do not allow my son(Poor guy) to partake in these activities because they take time away from what is truly important - the love of God. Every day I come to pick up my son I see the children absorbed in killing people and reading about the devil. I want to do what I can to help these kids realize the waste of their soul. Together we can overcome this addiction (Apparently to her an addiction is something you somewhat enjoy and have done more than once).

So what do you think of this, Escapist? Wait, before you answer I've prepared a FAQ for expected questions.
1. Let her do what she wants you have no right to stop her what if someone ______ YOUR _____?
I will not let her do what she wants because this affects me, and a lot of other students.

2.-insert personal religious opinion-
Great, I don't care. how about telling me what you think of her religious opinion?

3. She's right games and comics are a waste of time get rid of them throw them away BURN THEM!
Thank you for your input. I'm not going to flame you or anything.

4. If someone believes that God told them something to do then what's wrong?
Well there's a difference between doing just that, and acting on what you have been 'told', especially if its something like this.

Okay, now you can post. Sorry.
Thanks for your input.
I'd say dispatch her in any manner if you can do so without being caught. Her kid will be let out of the basement, your school will be free to entertainment, there will be one less idiot on the planet and you would know that when you PM me back to confirm the deed has been done I will read it with pride.

Also if you get caught, plea = God told me to do it.

I have to ask, is she actually getting anywhere with her insane crusade for fundamentalism campaign?

If not, tell her to sod off and carry on as normal. If so, tell your parents that she's a stupid liar. If that doesn't work, you may need to plant evidence making her out to be a drug baron.

EDIT: Also, YOU (almost) HAVE MY NAME! THIEF! ;)

I'd tell her I was reading about the devil and learning how to use guns in preparation for the day she tries to tell me how to live my life, and it's looking as if that day has almost come.

I registered only to reply to this thread , since it seemed completely unacceptable for her to force religious beliefs on you and violate your human rights.
Soooo this is how we do things here : If something which oppresses us like that persists , we lock ourselves up in the school after breaking in at night ,write down our thesis and arguements and refuse to go out until we have succeeded or at least come to a compromising solution. The police or anyone else has no right to interfere or force us out.
If that's not the case in your country and you may run in trouble you can still fight with less drastic but equally effective methods, like forming a dialogue committee and explaining rationally. What is important is that you fight back and dont allow self-important religious pseudo martyrs run around. (All these suggestions are under the assumption that the school council is materializing her war against enterTAINTment :) )

Yeah, I don't like extremists. I don't have anything against religions (except for scientology, perhaps) but that's idiotic. Like all the comic writers, game developers and heavy metal bands are a part of a conspiracy to make all the children satan worshippers and murderers.

Actually, come to think of it, just hire a lawyer and sue her for Slander/Defamation/Libel. Hell, she's given a publication stating what she believes the facts are and is presenting them as the undeniable truth, so its libel.

Wait, your high school has comics and manga?

Closest thing my school had to that was a short story by Stephen King. Lucky Sonova...

As much as I'm for the right to freedom of speech, I draw the line on forcing one's religion on other people. That hust ticks me off.I mean come ON! I'f I read "Harry Potter" will that want me to worship the devil? NO! These people should remove their heads from their collective asses and GET A FREAKING LIFE. I have nothing against religion in general, just the tightwads who reuse to see the other side of an issue.
(Also, if you ask me, it's not fair to blame the kid for the parent's screw-ups.)

Fundamentalist, noun: Someone driven by the haunting fear that someone, somewhere is happy.

Edit: On the other hand, it should be noted if oinly for trivia value that Sandy Petersen, level designer for Doom 2 and creator of the Call of Cthulhu tabletop game, is a very devout Mormon. Just because someone has strong faith doesn't mean they sign up to the histrionic hang-up brigade.

A person's right to religion ends where another person's right to choose begins. End of discussion.

It's morons like this that make Christians look bad.

For the record, however, most Christian haters are similarly stupid to assume this is what every believer is like: "preaching hate" and forcing beliefs on others is not common practice, it's simply the most publicized, and it is definitely not in line with what the Bible actually teaches. People like this lady are messed up.
Well i agree that say that you are all intolerant assholes is pretty stupid. But i only need a bible to prove that your religion encourages ignorance, violence and intolerance. It's just that you don't really follow the teachings of your religion.

(ohhhh and if your rebuttal to this is "But it's only the old tastament law books that are violent, then here's a little quote for ya.)

For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.? (Matthew 5:18-19)

That's from the sermon on the mount by the way.
Wow. It really took 128 posts for someone to post something mildly anti-religious. Maybe there's hope for non-flamey religious debate on these Forums yet.

Anyway, that passage applies solely to the 10 Commandments, which are still followed today. There are other passages in the New Testament later on that are quoted as saying stuff like "do not forget the old laws", which some attempt to use to say that Christians are not following their faith, but these people fail to realize that said passages are references to the 10 Commandments.

Religion is the thing holding humanity back from greatness. Humanity would be leaps and bounds ahead without it.
Several religious organizations during the Dark Ages were dedicated towards the preservation and advancement of knowledge. They were the scientists and philosophers of their day.

Just a thought.

Anyway, pleased to see that this thread is non-flamey from a religious standpoint: however, I am mildly disappointed that a lot of the responses are "kill her." Like I once said to The Root of All Evil, the only thing that changes over time seems to be who is getting burned at the stake.

Oh, God...
Here we have an example of Christians giving other Christians a bad name.

Sure, Christians are taught to preach the gospel, but too many people do it in an unpleasant way. You have to try to get your message into the persons head, not down their throats.

Besides, what harm can those do? It's not like they're grimoires...

This I whole-heartedly believe. It's amazing that a lot of people in society (including myself once) are not taught this.
