Surely you could keep the HD cable from your current console? The new 360 has to have an HDMI port, right?

I alternate. My room at home has an SD TV in it, my house at uni has an HD ready TV. Can't say I've had any problems with small text on the SD one, but it's pretty big (for a CRT screen, anyway, and my eyesight is a fair way above average.
I'm home alone for now though, so I've moved the xbox to the larger, HD television in the living room. It's good while it lasts.
I don't have HDMI..and My TV doesn't have an HDMI port.

Right now I'm just using Component Cables.

Woah, that surprises me big time. I've never ever heard someone say that stuff actually looked worse on an HD TV. I mean, all HD TV technically does is just display more stuff, it has about 5 times as much pixels as your average SD TV. I mean just look at this:
That's a clear increase in quality, not even remotely debatable.

As for the ridiculous things in MW2; that's not the TV's fault, that's the game's fault. It's just a shittier looking game than one might think. It's the developer's fault that the trees look like crap, it's their fault that they added ridiculous amounts of bloom on the characters. A TV just shows it all, the developer made the game.

An SD TV just can't display all those things properly, so you don't notice it doesn't look as superb as one had hoped for and while that hides some ugly things of MW2 I've also seen that it hides a huge number of gorgeous things. GoW3 looked more like GoW2 than your average PS3 game on an HD TV.

As for Bad Company 2, you made me curious enough to actually try it out. I fear for the results, Valparaiso is already one helluva clusterfuck on HD, I can't imagine how much madness it must be when everything's blotted together because that bucket can not even display half of the visual information that's being produced by the console. Now it's just a matter of waiting before my parents go on holiday.
I've seen comparison photos like that before and I've never been convinced. The SD pictures are always made more blurry by photo editing. I've been watching TV, playing games, and watching movies on an SDTV my entire life, and I've never, ever, seen an image that blurry. Ever.

Playing in HD isn't a necessity for me. I can recognize and read everything just fine(and trust me, my scores reflect that). Wether or not the patch in the corner has more grass in HD than SD, or wether or not the explosions look cooler in HD than SD isn't a concern of mine. Games are still completely playable in standard with no loss of enjoyment.

When the time comes that a game cannot be played without being in high definition, I'll stop playing, or play older games. I'm simply not impressed with HD.

I use an SD TV. Because it works just fine. I really don't see a reason for HD.

I don't need HD. Sure it makes everything pretty, but that doesn't matter much if the game/movie/tv show/ect isn't good.

And developers, make the subtitle text bigger. Seriously, it can't be that hard to up the font size. Its just stupid how small most text is in games.

My SD TV is just fine. I don't see a reason to go HD until my SD breaks. That probably won't happen for another 5-6 years. Even then I'll only go HD because I don't have a choice. Probably won't hook anything up with HD cables, though.
Ummm wow, I guess everyone has different needs. Enjoy your SDTV and VHS
Anyone that finds themselves needing HDTV has bigger problems than slightly-less-clear picture.
wow...seriously, that guy needs to get a grip haha

I have never owned an HDTV, but really I don't think I'll be shelling out the money anytime soon. Right now, a bigger TV period is all I really ask for. I'll be happy to get a flatscreen that's bigger than 20 inches

(Devs: not everyone HAS an HDTV. Please include an option for BIGGER text).
Thank you seriously its a pain in the ass to read text in any game now a days. Also will be nice to have a fullscreen option instead of only the widescreen with the black on top and the bottom. Seriously SD TV already small enough, do you have to make viewing the game smaller? I honestly wish u can use the player options (when watching a movie or video on xbox)to make it stretch, letterbox, full, native screen modes. Is that too much to ask? Let the hardware do the work, if Devs don't want to add a full screen option. Its possible.

As seen by this this thread, a lot of us actually DO enjoy standard definition. Plus I'm sure your quaint remark about Wii owners will net you "brownie points" too. Some of my collection is still on VHS as the dvd version for older films+anime isn't available to buy here and that's still in perfect condition to boot.

I still play a PS3 on a 24" standard CRT set and yes some text can be almost unreadable in places but so far all I'm seeing advantage wise in a HDTV set is a clearer picture....and that's it really. I don't have the money to fork out over £200 for that alone really and I'm still content to wait on prices to be dropped in the meantime.

Anyway playing older PS2 games on a HDTV is far worse quality wise than PS3 titles on a normal SDTV. Trust me on that one!
Literally if it ain't broke, don't replace it and I'm glad to see quite a few fellow Escapists seeing this line of reasoning too

I don't use a HD TV. My old SD is just fine for my games' graphics. (I only have a Wii and older consoles, you see.)

Which presumably you'd have to return with the older xbox... Hmm. Is the old one still under warranty? If not, and it breaks, it's possibly worth getting the new one anyway. Or just buying an arcade and attaching your hard drive to it. (I did that, but I was replacing a 1st gen 360 with the more recent version, and it cost about £30 more to replace than to get fixed. I keep planning to try to fix the old one myself, still haven't got round to it)

I have the feeling that they look so blurry because they're very zoomed in. When I look really closely at my parent's SD TV it does look like that. Then again nobody does that, so I see where you're coming from. Fact is though, an HD TV has about 5 times as many pixels as an SD TV. That's a lot of pixels and a lot of added visual information, that's all the difference there is, nothing more.

Ah well, I still find your opinion very...interesting. I'd love to look at the difference through your eyes. Maybe therein lies the answer.

It's not mainly games I love HD for anyway, as the image quality of a game doesn't just lie in the TV's ability to display it (as proven by your MW2 example), I mainly love it for movies. My first cinematic experience in HD was Watchmen....by the Nine I was sold in a flash. The unholy levels of detail, it's like that film was made for HD. Star Trek (the latest flick) in HD can be summed up with this:

Bad Company 2 with 5.1 surround sound (set very very loud) can be summed up by that .gif as well. Completely blows you away.

I used my component cables too for HD. Look at your cables and just follow them down, at one point you'll see a little switch. That switch switches it between SD and HD. You don't really need an HDMI cable, but it's just a little less clutter.

i have an HD for the 360 and Wii downstairs and an SD for my room's PS3 and PS2. the small text crap is getting pretty annoying...even on an HD TV it's hard to read stuff. why do they even make the text so small anyways?

I think I'm coming off as not seeing the difference, and that's not it. I see the difference, I just don't find it necessary or particularly amusing. I'm just not wowed by it. It's not enough of a difference to warrant me spending tons of money I don't have on something I don't need or like.

Same. I'm on a 23" monitor; although with 1080p games look gorgeous on it. The lack of AA on the 360 is less noticeable on a smaller screen, so I guess it's not too bad.

I use my 4:3 aspect ratio TV for PS2 and normal TV watching, but I bought a 24'' HD PC/gaming screen half a year back, I got it solely for HD movies and for PS3, 150? wasn't so bad for it, really.

Had to get it because the text was plain too small and I knew how much better the games and such would look. I don't regret my purchase at all though, it was about time to get a LCD screen for my "new" PC anyway, kinda of hit two birds with one stone.
