I felt that Final Fantasy XII was one of the best of the series (it's my favorite anyway), but none the less, Final Fantasy VII seems to have somehow made a name for itself in terms of its place in gaming history. You can't really predict what will become forever remembered or not, but for what its worth, I have heard it was a great game for its time.
I think what makes most people remember it would be the characters, since that topic comes up most. I guess people really bonded with the characters in that game, which makes it more likely that they'll remember the game.
Still, when it comes to Final Fantasy, you're bound to get people who either hate the series overall, only like the originals, or (and I really wish I could see this kind more often) people who can appreciate each game for its own seperate reasons. For instance, Final Fantasy X was decently fun to play, but I can admit that the story is kind of, well... stupid. As for Final Fantasy XIII, many people seem to complain that not having an MP system ruined it or something, but I felt it was an interesting experiment.
Whatever the case, people are bound to bring it up for whatever reason, so whatever.
