So... why do we all agree Final Fantasy 7 is one of the greatest games ever?

I felt that Final Fantasy XII was one of the best of the series (it's my favorite anyway), but none the less, Final Fantasy VII seems to have somehow made a name for itself in terms of its place in gaming history. You can't really predict what will become forever remembered or not, but for what its worth, I have heard it was a great game for its time.

I think what makes most people remember it would be the characters, since that topic comes up most. I guess people really bonded with the characters in that game, which makes it more likely that they'll remember the game.

Still, when it comes to Final Fantasy, you're bound to get people who either hate the series overall, only like the originals, or (and I really wish I could see this kind more often) people who can appreciate each game for its own seperate reasons. For instance, Final Fantasy X was decently fun to play, but I can admit that the story is kind of, well... stupid. As for Final Fantasy XIII, many people seem to complain that not having an MP system ruined it or something, but I felt it was an interesting experiment.

Whatever the case, people are bound to bring it up for whatever reason, so whatever.

FF7 is definitely near the bottom of the list of Final Fantasy games. I'll give it some credit that it really got the JRPG genre going in the West and helped make 3-D graphics popular, but pretty much any Final Fantasy game is better than 7. Only ones that are really lower than 7 are 1, 3, and 5. FF6 is the best, followed closely by FF10 and then a tie between FF9, FF8, and FF4.

Side note: FF8 is so much better when you learn that drawing is pointless and you can get all your spells from items instead.
I love how diverse FF fans are. am serious its great. Like 8 is great and you seem to be a fan but the funny wait nvm. I started wrting this before i finished reading your post thought your fav game was 8... turns out its 6 WHAT A SUPRISE somone on the escapist saying 7s bad and 6 is the best in the series. You also bash 1,3,5. i take back all the good things i was gonna type and praise about you.

Also FF10 is the exact same thing as 7 is. When 7 came out it made the PS1 awsome great graphics instresting story. fast forward to FF10 the exact same effect. I also assume you think 12,13 are bad to? your not a fan. Just another guy loving 6 because of dark and needlesly gritty it is.

Forget the fucking Game, I want someone to tell me what is the Big Friggin deal is with that death scene? YOU KNOW THE ONE. I mean, it's become both a cornerstone, emotional moment AND an inside joke of the community generation.......it's just some blonde chick dying.

I played the first bit of that game (up to the point where you leave that big city and go to some fort with a shitty RTS mini-game)......and i was thoroughly annoyed by Each and Every Character. Overcompensating Whiner, Stereotyped and mildly insulting black guy, Busty Brunette with about as much Emotional independence as a fence post.......and that fruity blonde.....oh god.

And you know what the worst part of it is!!?!?

[sub] I kinda liked it :S

[sub]I mean, the world was pretty nice

[sub] and the gameplay was solid enough[sub]

and sephiroth was kinda cool [/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub]

I don't think it was great.

I thought it sucked. Of course, I don't like turn based games and I did play FF7 first about... 3 years ago or so but still, I thought it was awful. Just boring characters, stupid gameplay, a story that didn't get really good until the halfway point (which I am not getting to) and the graphics made my eyes bleed. Everyone looked like a goddamn pinata. Even by Ps1 standards, that sucked.

Personally, I don't think Square has made a good RPG since Chrono Cross...or Final Fantasy IX, not Final Fantasy VII though.

I'd call the Nostalgia Factor on this one. The game itself isn't that compelling. Atleast for me.

Okay, might as well toss my hat into the ring:

Look at the game for what it is. A final fantasy game. Build an army, travel across huge worlds, have an in depth storyline, interesting characters, the whole nine yards. For the time it came out, it was one of the most complex games on the market. Plus one of the most controversial. In an age in which defeating an enemy only meant receiving a powerup or points, having one of the main characters quite literally DIE was almost unheard of.

I think it's held in high regard because of it's complexity, controversy, and sheer depth at a time where 3D gameplay was still young.

Now sure, it has its flaws. It is a Final Fantasy game, after all. The length and complexity being one of its downfalls as well as its strengths. There's way too much you need to remember and do that it can be a real patience tester for people who aren't used to the game series.

But ah well. Point is that it's one of the most memorable games in history, regardless of whether or not it was good.

Well to add my two cent, I don't think it is/was, it just got the most limelight.

Yes, it had good points and one of the main characters died, what many believed was emotional scene, I didn't really feel it but that's just me. It had 3D gameplay and alike so at the time it probably seemed like a big deal.

I could tell you everything you need to know in a post so brief I'd get a suspension for low content. So, here it is, albeit padded out with an introduction so as to avoid mod intervention:

Nostalgia.

I find it ironic that Setzer is your avatar.

I attribute most of the games love to nostalgia, the current gen of gamers where old enough to know which buttons to push right around the time that the PS1 was the hip cool thing to have and FFVII happened to be the first of the series on the system. Plus the attempts to vary gameplay with more then just combat didn't hurt either.

Because for me it was a step up, and completely new concept. I had played FF6 and a few other JRPGs before FF7 came out so it wasn't my first JRPG and overall I'm not a fan of JRPGs but this game has been my favourite game for a lot of years now and it just changed so much for the better, the story was gripping, at the time the graphics were amazing, characters were interesting and it took a lot of time to complete and had a nice open world.

I always felt like Final Fantasy 12 was the best in the series. It didn't have a creepy ass laughin Yuna scene, and even though it was cutscene heavy, it still remembered that it was a game first (ahem FF13)

interesting; it almost looks like not everybody agrees that ff7 is the best game evar created in all multiverses out there
i am one of them

of course, it sure had its impact on (j)rpgs and maybe (just maybe) some impact on the "gaming world", but i belong to that group (that actually isn't half as small as fanboys like to think) who don't like it that much. actually, i didn't like it enough to play it through - and i very, very, very, very,... rarely stop playing somewhere along the way. actually, there were only 3 games i didn't finish, if memory serves; ff7 being one of them

and no, i don't intend to rant or something like that. i only say i don't like it. others do. fine with me, as long as they don't try to *convince* me that it is soooo[...]ooooo great; to me, it's not. and maybe they don't like my favourite game. that's just fine as well.

I don't. Despite the fact that it was my introduction to the Final Fantasy series, I really don't think it's all that special. It has a few shinning moments, but I would never ever call it the greatest game of all time. I wouldn't even put it in my top 20... well maybe my top 20, but it'd be like number 17 or 18.

i just watched this

and then i thought to myself... everyone just seems to "agree" that this is one of the greatest games ever made. why?

EDIT: Must have confused "important" with "great". :/ well, ive only ever heard praise for it whenever ive heard about it. thats why i i thought it was just one of those "accepted facts".
It's a general consensus that it's one of the best games of all time. As such there are going to be people that hate it for no other reason than it's popular. There is no such thing as universal love for a game, this one just comes closer than most. It's noteworthy that even now they can sell things based on the game's name and characters reasonably well due to an enduring fan base despie the passage of many years.

Of course given the age, there are plenty of kids around in the gaming community now who never played it, and as such have no respect for anything that isn't from their generation or has aged. In another decade or so they will be the same way about something that is popular now.

The above parody seems to be based on what people say about the game, rather than the game itself. It can be said that Cloud has a lot of Angst, but he doesn't fall into the whole depressed Emo thing, unable to do anything, until part way through the game, and he does recover from it, once he does he's a lot differant. That's one of the things that makes the game popular, he really wasn't a one note character that just "stayed there" through the entire thing. Also it can be argued that Cloud was an angst driven protaganist before it became really popular and was everywhere, and it's quite probable he's the prototype that started the trend in video games.
