I used to think marijuana was bad, then after being pushed to near-death on a movie shoot over the summer, I realized I could use marijuana to overcome my sleep aid addiction. Works well, plus everyday I find myself smiling and feeling a lot less anxious and depressed.

God.

Oh wait, I never believed
Yeah, atheists like to think they were smarter than the mases their whole life. I doubt you were born faithless. Not meant to flame you though, just calling you out.

OP I used to believe that maxipads were simply diapers for women who can't hold it in until I learned the horrifying truth. Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

Well, they're not necessarily born with a particular faith (unless you believe that God has His mark on our hearts, or however that verse goes, which is how I rationalized not-exposed-to-Christianity infant/young deaths to be fair (that the child, not having learned anything, intrinsically/instinctively believes in God, even if not by name, or even concept)), but rather are just highly impressionable to...whatever. Fun Fact: Babies see the world upside down for a while, and don't have a sense of depth for a while longer (I'll be assed to find my source (i.e. some Cracked.com article, which itself has sources).

Things I believed but didn't know were wrong: that "intrinsically" was spelled "intristically" (or similar; point is the "st" instead of "ns").

For the longest time I though the peices of lead jammed in me were going to work there way out by now...but nope! Still stuck in there
Similar thing here, only for me it's pebbles that have embedded themselves into my wrist. Yours is probably a much more interesting story.

Baby carrots aren't actually baby carrots. They're just regular carrots that have been cut that way.

I used to believe zombies were real and that sooner or later an outbreak would occur in my country. *sigh, unfortunately that will probably never happen in my lifetime. A shame too, my friends and I used to fantasize about where we would make a stand in our town, what weapons we would gather, how we would get supplies, etc. We so so psyched up for it really happening! Then it never happened and we all went to college and got jobs. This hasn't ended my enjoyment of Dawn of the Dead or other films, but sometimes I wish I could kill a zombie, just once...

Interesting Note: The CIA actually has a national security "What to do if..." plan just in case a zombie outbreak ever does occur in the US.

Seriously? Saying that they don't believe in God or Christianity is in no way attacking anyone's beliefs. If it is, then I could say that people are attacking my beliefs if they believe in Christianity, God, religion, etc.
You're right, but I wasn't saying that. I felt disrespected because this thread is entitled "Things you believed all your life that turned out to be wrong." And people replied with things such as "God" and "Christianity." Therefore, I took it as them implying that they know - as a fact - that God does not exist.

I once thought the punch line of the joke "what's black and white ad red all over?" was referring to some mystical newspaper that used the color red heavily.

It turns out that the joke is "what's black and white and read all over?" I realized this about a week ago.

Does it include playing The man comes around by Jhonny Cash? If not we're screwed.

For a while, I just kind of believe the story of the Trojan Horse, Troy, etc. without really thinking about whether it really did happen or not. Then, after I actually started to think about it, it did seem a little out there, so I looked it up and did find out it was just a story.
Wha? Irr... *signs list*

There is a great point that at least was grazed in that: No matter if there's a God or not, that societies have been built on or otherwise affected by such deitical (lulz, nu wurdz) beliefs, to whatever ends (and whatever means), is extremely important in understanding history and the modern world. Same goes for ardent non-beliefs, to whatever extents, and to general questioners (which, I'll say, I'm less of; I'm usually set in a way until I learn/accept otherwise, then be set into that until etc. etc.). (Please, someone, get me off this subject.)

I used to believe that lemmings committed mass suicide as a form of population control. A lie perpetrated by Disney [http://www.snopes.com/disney/films/lemmings.asp]!

I also used to believe that most people don't consume porn and that most businesses try to disassociate themselves from the porn business. Alas, humanity, you so thoroughly disappoint me sometimes.

We choose what we believe in
Sorry, but you are wrong there, or at least I disagree with it. If anyone really thinks we can choose what we believe, try waking up tomorrow and believing something completely different then what you believe now. For a few years, I was kinda jealous of all the jesus freak people because they always seemed happy and thought that if I was like them, I'd be happy. But, I couldn't believe in that. Sure, I could act like I believe in God, and say I did, but then (at the time) I knew that there wasn't one.

Well, I was wrong. Somehow almost dying got me to believe, but it didn't make my life happier, it made it worse. The whole "saved" stuff felt like I signed my life away. For a short time I did go through a period of doubt thinking there was a God that controlled everything, and, by sheer coincidence, those two years were also the two years where I had thought about killing myself multiple times. Then everything reverted back to not believing.

That I would out some point, turn out to be a functional adult who could do more with his free time than play video games.

Still, life could be worse. I do have the full capabilities of all my limbs.

Hmm, I have no idea, but probably not because it's the CIA and their music tastes date back to ancient times, before any of us had hair on our balls.

Thing is... *lets his nihilist side out* ... you can't really disprove anything. Aliens, leprechauns, zombies, a taco that shits ice cream, the fact that we are not all brains in jars somewhere. Same with science. Just because it doesn't follow the laws of physics or nature, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. The laws of physics, nature, etc. were man made and based off what people knew, and people are ignorant, there is no exception to that. So, basically "impossible" translates to "we haven't found out how yet" and none existent to "we haven't found it yet".
