I am sure there is amazing stuff being released now, and in 20 or 30 years there will be "Hits of the 90s" and "Hits of the 00's" being sold on late night infomercials, and we will be sitting back going, yeah, i remember when they released that mmm-bop song
Load of crap. If there was something truly great released now it would be popular because it's great.

Also, I'm sure it is going to improve in the future, can't remain this shallow for long.
Music nowadays is less about the quality than who has the biggest amount of money to make their music appeal to the widest audience. There is plenty of great music, we have as much excellent music being produced now than ever before, just because the radio only plays stuff you don't like, remember it's due to the fact that artist has the greatest amount of money behind them, making them more easily seen than less talented artists.
Here we go.

No, there is no music released in the last 10 years I could call great, there is one I think but that's it. I have a list for this, there is plenty of music that falls into my good and some in my very good catagory, but nothing really special.

I don't listen to the radio anymore, it's heaps faster to just look for all the new stuff on the net and recommendations by people. *wink wink*
I dont think you can categorically say that nothing released in the last 10 years has been great, i know im being nit-picky but i doubt that you have listened to everything released in the last 10 years.

I also generally dont listen to the radio much anymore, and it seems that when i do dip in, even on the indie station, the songs either havent changed much or people are just releasing the same stuff over and over.

Songs that will come to define the era will be those songs that stood out, songs that were different from all the pop crap and stand the test of time. Songs that shock and amaze, and not the songs that people dance to in crappy clubs.

So take heart, my fellow music lover, i dont think that future generations will be looking back and saying...did you guys just listen to lady gaga?

I don't like 'insert name' music, but other people do, hes/shes so overrated! This is stupid, i think Beatles suck but thats just my opinion and apparently a lot of people think otherwise, that doesn't make them overrated.
agree totally, opinion is all that matters, and like i said earlier, all bands are probably overrated, because no band heralds the second coming (or the first coming, or whatever it is that your religion is waiting for), so why do they deserve to be defended like they are.

BTW, on the Beatles, they had about 10 decent songs, thats it, and it was almost impossible to hear them live most of the time, so no one really would know what they sounded like at concert.

There are no overrated musicians only people who just hate them because they are popular, often for reasons they can comprehend or can't find a way to like.

People have freedom of choice only dictated by the place they live in.

No, no one can listen to everything, but I truly believe if there was a band that could write great songs then it would take seconds for them to become popular.

However, there have been songs that defined the era in the last 10 years like Eminem's Lose Yourself and some others.

Further to this, sorry for quoting u so often, but your views interest me, look at the charts, even the publicly voted charts of each year, and try and remember the last time u heard any songs in the top 10. I am using the Triple J Hottest 100 as a guide, u can use billboard or whatever.

To be honest, i had trouble finding one that really fit my point but here is 1998

The Offspring ? "Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)"
Ben Lee ? "Cigarettes Will Kill You"
Custard ? "Girls Like That (Don't Go for Guys Like Us)"
Hole ? "Celebrity Skin"
KoЯn ? "Got the Life"
Regurgitator ? "! (Song Formerly Known As)"
Jebediah ? "Harpoon"
Powderfinger ? "The Day You Come"
You Am I ? "Heavy Heart"
The Living End ? "Save The Day"

i honestly have not heard any of those songs played on the radio since about 1999

they were popular once, then never again. I dont believe that any of these songs would find themselves in any list of the greatest songs of the 90's. Try and remember the number 1 song last year...i have no idea, but i am sure you can think of your favorite song of last year, and chances are it will either be the same as, or at least the same band as heaps of other people

Absolutely everyone ever.

If you have ever picked up an instrument or sung a note then you are grossly overrated.

Also, I am so non-mainstream that the only music I listen to is recordings of rivers and thunderstorms.

So there.
I consider both recordings of rivers and thunderstorms to be overrated!
I only listen to recordings of rivers during thunderstorms.
Recordings?!?!? You can only get the true feeling if it's done LIVE!

It is only truly independent if you can imagine the sounds in your own head, thus removing the chance of anyone else ever hearing them

EDIT: removed retardedness

Popularity is not the right yard stick to be using to judge greatness, because is most cases what is popular is mass produced pigshit

in many ways, the music industry can be compared with the food industry

How often in the last 5 to 10 years?

Also, what sort of radio station do you listen to at work, there are stations that seem determined to peddle some of this crap with the pretense of playing "vintage"

On a more serious note, the public want what the public get.

most of the time absolute radio is playing, although i have heard it on XFM too. (london radio stations), and yes absolute radio does try to be a bit vintage.

First things first, the obvious ones like Bieber and Kesha. You have to be a 13 year old girl to see the appeal of Bieber, so i guess I'm not in the target audience, but there really is no excuse for liking Kesha. None at all.

Other than that you have:
- Taylor Swift (probably a nice girl, but her music is horrible)
- Black eyed peas (music don't get much worse than this)
- Eminem (yes your mom was a *****. We get it. Now find something else to rap about)
- 50 Cent (Rebecca Black write better lyrics. Also, I find his songs to be repetative, flat and boring)
- Any rapper who raps about bitches and hoes, moneh and how great violent crime is.
- Nirvana
- Nickelback
- Elvis (He would never be considerd the king of Rock n' roll if it wasn't for that acceptable white skin of his.
- Sex Pistols (was created for the sole purpose of beeing a money making machine and it shows)
- Wofgang Amadeus Mozart (Realy? Greatest musical genious ever? I suppose he fits in to the "good, but overrated" catogory along with Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden etc.)

I also can't stand most modern country music. What the hell happend to that genre? Same goes for dance music, though that has always been bad.

/opinion i guess

All the "metalcore" and emo stuff that gives actual metal a bad name.
I hate saying I like heavy metal and people going, "Ew, I don't understand how you could like heavy rock metal or whatever it's called! It's all just screaming!"
Makes me want to rip my eyes out.
What the people my age see in that c**p I'll never know.

I remember telling people in high school that few people would well remember Hootie and the Blowfish and that no one would really care for them. And, just like Jewel, "Hootie" had to "go country" to hold onto anything resembling mainstream success.
