"I'm always ready, Falkner!" she screamed as she looked at the next Pokemon Falkner brought to the field. It was another bird, roughly the same size as the Pidgey the preceded it. "Don't underestimate me, bird-boy!" she hollered with annoyance. "Eevee, let's open up with a Tail Whip this time!"
'I've never seen this Pokemon in action... So I had better just play it safe for now. I don't have a back up option, so I should try to keep Eevee in top form.'
Eevee, at this point, made it up to the Spearow, and shook his tail right in its face, making it dropped its guard before the Eevee hopped back, waiting for its foe's move.
Jason looked back at Lily and saw that she was doing a much better job then everyone thought she would have. He heard Matt cheering Lily on and Jason decided to do the same. Jason believed that Lily could beat Falkner, and he didn't know why the others were so pessimistic.
"Lily, you've got this!" Jason shouted, not knowing what else to say. He wanted Lily to win because from what little he knew of her, she seemed like she deserved to beat Falkner.
"Well then, thats always good to hear" Falkner said as the Spearow continued to leer at the other trainer and her pokemon "Spearow, start things off with a Fury Attack" Falkner snapped at the pokemon, which then quickly closed the gap between teh two pokemon and started jabbing with its beak and scratching at the fox in waves
Once
Twice
Three times
It finally relented after four strikes when Eevee managed to throw it off, the bird hopped backwards and started to look for another opening to attack.
Darrel watched silently now, a little irritated that Matt would get so upset over a simple observation. Darrel was a nerd; he admitted that. And he'd spent months worth of research over the years he spent inside reading up on everything he could about Pokemon. He was practically a walking Pokedex. That's why he believed he could make those claims; he had the knowledge to back it up.
Her Eevee doesn't appear to be a very high level yet, and no matter how skilled it is she's still facing a Gym Leader. She'll need to swap out for a different Pokemon soon, or it won't last the match.
Lily smiled broadly as Matt and Jason cheered her on. It was strange to have people that she hardly even knew support her so much... After being on her own for so long, it felt so different to have someone supporting her.
She flinched, though, as she saw Eevee get hit by the Spearow's assault. The fox staggered backwards, trying to maintain its footing. It struggled for a moment, then reassumed its battle position. Lily let out a sigh of relief, knowing that the battle wasn't over yet.
"Eevee, try another Tail Whip!" Lily ordered. 'This thing is definitely faster and stronger than that Pidgey... But I can still win, nonetheless. If its defense is low enough, a solid tackle should do the job. Bird's bones are hollow...' she recalled from a biology class. 'So they should be easy to break!'
Eevee reached the Spearow and wagged his tail in its face again, then retreated, this time maintaining more space for an opportunity to dodge the next attack.
"I see what your trying to do, but I'm telling you it wont be as easy as you think" warned Falkner. "Try another Fury Attack" he said, and while he sounded bold as ever the Spearow seemed a bit more wary, but as before the distance between the two pokemon were closed in an instant and he was buffeted with another array of attacks from the angry bird. Though it wasnt as fierce as the first time and seemed more of a hit and run tactic, as it retreated after only a few small strikes.
That Spearow seems to be not as reckless anymore, seems that she's got it on the defensive... Matt thought to himself. And what about Falkner? He's in a marathon battle right now, he might be conserving his heavy hitters for later
"Hey, have any of you decided who's going up next?" He asked the other trainers around him.
"Well, Falkner, if you say so, I guess it must be right," Lily sarcastically replied. "So I should heed your warning! Let's change it up, Eevee, Tackle!"
The Pokemon gave a quick nod before doing his zigzag pattern once again, right up to the Spearow, blinking the last of the sand out of its eyes along the way.
"I'll go first, if nobody else wants to go before me." Jason said to Matt, looking around at the other trainers to see if anyone else wanted to go before him. Jason began pulling out Bagon's Pokeball, knowing that even if he didn't go right now, he would be going soon.
"Heh, couldnt see that coming" Falkner remarked sarcasticly "now Spearow, use Mirror Move to dodge!" He called out, and the pokemon seemed to know the plan as soon as he said it. It started following the Eevees pattern perfectly, and when the moment was right it broke the pattern and pulled to left before the Eevee could react and responded with a hard Peck to the Eevees side.
Matt was suprised by the tactic used to dodge the move thats... diffrent. I didnt think Miror Move could be used that way. It's a good strategy but it barely worked...
"So your next Jason? Well, I dont see any other takers so good luck"
"Just to keep things going, I think I'll go after you, Jason. Unless anyone else feels they want to after him" Sqaid Gereld, feeling alot less nervous about the Gym battle.
"Wait." Darrel said, standing up. He put his hand on Jason's shoulder. "Jason, do you mind if I take this one? There's something fresh in my mind, that I really want to try." His eyes were narrowed under his hair, as his mind began to analyze all the options he could use in his battle. He knew he needed to fight as soon as possible in the lineup.
"Go right ahead Darrel, I'd rather watch a few more battles before I let Bagon out anyway." Jason said, letting out a silent sigh of relief that he wouldn't be going immediately after Lily, she might up-show him, "You can go after Darrel, Gereld, I'll just go after you."
Jason then preceded to watch the fight, trying to memorize all of Falkner's techniques he was using on Lily, and not let those same techniques work on Bagon.
Lily was hardly amused by Alex's bad pun, and was even less so by Falkner's new strategy. 'That Mirror Move attack... It copies exactly what Eevee is doing without flaw... What do I do?' Lily began to panic. 'No, no, no! How do I fight an opponent that just copies me until the last second, then hits me while avoiding damage? It's just insult to injury...' She looked at Eevee, who was hopping back to his feet after the painful Peck attack.
"Go for another Tackle, this time, head on!" Lily shouted, hoping that the direct approach would break Falkner's strategy. Eevee charged straight on, but Spearow did the same thing, and once again broke off at the last minute, delivering a nasty Peck to Eevee's side.
Eevee rolled along the ground, then got back up, fighting to stay on his feet. He was on his last legs. He breathed heavily as he stared down the angry looking Spearow, trying to appear strong and intimidating.
'This has to be beatable. It has to be. But... how? All it has to do is see Eevee, and then it can...'
At that moment, something in Lily's mind clicked. Her thoughts went to when she was even younger, playing with her father in the park. All the other kids had their Pokemon, but all Lily needed was her dad. Her father was always eager to have fun, and Lily was always eager to apply something she learned in school to their games.
"Lily, Lily! Come on, the sun won't stay out all day! Hahaha!" Walter Dremia called out to his daughter. He was always up for a good run, but his legs were much longer than his seven year old girl's were, so he quickly got a lead on her. She was a quick runner however, so Lily didn't fall far behind.
"I'm coming Daddy!" the little girl shouted back. She caught up as he slowed down a little for her. "You're so fast, Daddy!" she grinned widely, revealing a few gaps in her mouth, as she was losing her teeth. "But I bet I can do something you can't!"
"Oh really?" the man entertained his daughter's thought. "And whatever can that be my dear?"
"Run around in circles as many times as you can, Daddy! I'll do it too, and I betcha I can do it more!"
"Oh yea?" Walter responded. "Not if I get a head start!" he began to run around in wide circles as quickly as he could. Little Lily did the same.
After about a minute of this, Walter became dizzy, lost his footing, and fell over. Dusting himself off, he turned to see his daughter, who was still going strong. He laughed. "Alright, Lily, you won!"
She stopped, shook her head, and ran over to her father enthusiastically. "Betcha wanna know how I did that so well, huh, Daddy?"
"Sure, my little genius!" Walter praised his daughter. "How did you?"
"Well," the girl began, "In school, we learned about getting dizzy. You get dizzy when your brain takes in too much stuff and then blurs it all together. But if your brain doesn't take it in... You can't get dizzy! So if you close your eyes and run around, you won't get dizzy! That's what I did," she stated proudly. "I didn't really, believe it, at first, but now you made it all work just like it was s'posed to!
"Wow!" Walter smiled at her rudimentary understanding of the subject. "You must be smarter than some of those kids that belong in sixth grade, huh?" She nodded her head. "Good girl! I'm so proud. Now let's go! There's only so much time in the day!"
"Thanks, Daddy..." Lily blinked out a tear.
Then she looked up at Falkner with a sudden, new conviction in her eyes.
"Eevee, are you ready to win?!?" she yelled.
"Eevee, Ee!" he cried out to answer.
"OK! Let's go, then! Use Tackle! But this time, form a circle pattern around that Spearow, and run as fast as you can! But there's one important part... Close your eyes, and just listen to where the Spearow is!" she added in the last bit to throw off Falkner's game.
The Eevee immediately did as it was told. Lily then waited for Falkner to make his final move.
Falkner had no idea what to make of his oponnents strategy, but didnt let it show. "Please, ANOTHER Tackle? And your doing it blind, why not just withdraw and call it a day? Spearow, same as before, use Mirror Move to dodge" he said dismissivley, the bird seemed to hesistate before doing so and began to copy the circling pattern exactley.
As before it waited to make its move last second, keeping a close eye on the details but this time something was off, it began deviating in the pattern very slightly as it began to get dizzy.
"Hey! Keep focused!" The Gym leader called when he saw his pokemon begin to break patter, it tried to get back on track, and when the final moment came to dodge- it missed it's chance by a quarter of a second, a normaly small error was enough for the Eevee to take finish this.
The Fox lept and struck it's avian target, sending the Spearow to the ground and allowing Lily to win her round with the Gym leader.
Falkners cool facade was cracked, his strategy was shattered and he lost the round with his basic team. "Spearow... return" was all he said.
"You did good girl, now go to the side. Your times up and moving on to the next trainer you'll get your badge when I'm through with the others" he said bluntly as he glanced to the group. Now it was going to be a matter of pride
"Way to go Lily!" Matt cheered after seeing her impressive display. Happy how she was able to come back from what seemed to be a horrible situation.
"Alright then Darryl, you wanted to be next? Then go up there and lets see what you can do" he said, nudging the trainer to go up.
"Good job Lily, I knew you could do it." Jason said, watching the conclusion of Lily's battle with interest. He had listened to her last statement, 'Thanks Daddy', which had urged him to ask what she meant by that, but he decided to let the question go unanswered until another day. Now Jason turned his attention to Darrel, since he was the next person up to battle Falkner.
Alex made his way to Darrel. He put his hand on his shoulder and slowly chose his words "I know you're a little disadvantaged so here's Cecily. She can hit the flying pokemon from distance with Watergun. I'd just like her back after." He handed Darrel her pokeball. It had her name written on it in black paint.
"Thanks," Darrel said, nodding as he put the Pokeball on the belt. He smiled again, but unlike his normal goofy grin there was a notably devious edge to it. "But hopefully I won't be needing her." He stepped down off the seats, nodding to Lily as he passed her and made his way out to his place on the battlefield. He looked around at the place where the battle would be taking place. It was certainly large enough to give Falkner's Pokemon an edge, but with a little luck he would be able to use that to his advantage.
He pulled his first Pokeball of its belt. "I've heard a lot about you, Falkner." He said, getting ready for the battle. "The master of bird Pokemon. To be honest, man, I'm a little disappointed. I was planning on keeping him for a last resort, but I'd say it's all right to start off like this."
He tossed the ball out to its spot on the field, out of which stepped Spike, the Mankey ready for battle.
Darrel wasn't sure why he had gotten so serious, but the thought of such a monumental battle, and with such an audience he couldn't afford to mess up. Even so, he knew what he was doing; years of research told him he'd handle the battle just fine.
