"What is the reason behind the eye and the incense?" Quan asked the bartender, assuming it was some religious symbol.

"It's part of a ritual to Avinah, for continued protection of the inn." the innkeeper explained.

"Maybe..." Robin said, taking off the sky-metal ring. "Any ideas on passing time? Even I get bored of books eventually."

Mt. Faotar, Caverns - Day 11 - 22:19

Anik was not bothered by the description, as it was more for Timeas own sake, and Anik had heard such descriptions often enough, so that she was automatically trying to translate it in her mind, imagining music instead. She smiled: "It sounds wonderful. I wonder what became of it ...? Ah, no matter. You said you were traveling southwards? Did you have a goal, or were you just wandering around?"

Vala - Day 11
After spending the better part of an hour staying sitting against the wall, you manage to get yourself up and over to your bed. For a few hours, you try to meditate. The anger and hate you now constantly feel, however, makes it difficult. Mostly, your fury is concentrated on your 'master'. But when your mind slips you begin to think the same about the guards who treated you so poorly despite your best efforts to keep them safe, and also Timea for her insane ideas about technology.

So, once you feel well enough, you begin to exercise instead. You spend hours forcing yourself to keep going, using your anger as fuel. You've done so before, but you've always run out of steam fairly quickly. Now it feels like you could go on forever, and so you keep going. Eventually, you don't know how long, you fall down on your bed out of sheer exhaustion with your muscles burning from the strain.

"Avinah. The goddess of the earth." the innkeeper replied, a little puzzled that Quan Chi didn't know this.

"Ah. I apologise. I am a traveller, I am not familiar with the gods of this land." Quan Chi explained.

Mt. Faotar, Caverns - Day 11 - 22:20

"It was equal part just wandering around, and part looking for new territory. I didn't need it, back then. But that's not something my younger self cared about", Timea explained, after coming back from her nostalgia trip.

Finding the brain was almost certainly no longer edible, she took it out, and laid it aside for one of the wolves to come and eat up, if they wanted. After this she started severing the muscles and tendons at the base of the skull, to sever the head. "Knowing what is where helped in later days, however. So at least, it served a purpose, in the end."

"It certainly is very helpful to know what is where." Anik said, having quite a lot of experience with it. She continued eating, and thought for a bit, then said:

"If I may ask ... was this when the humans were still hunters and gatherers?"

"That's right", Timea answered, not seeing a problem with the question. Mainly because she could think of ways to easily worm out if others questioned the things mentioned. "At that point, the first recognisable civilisation was still a long way away. This was before the land radically changed, even."

"Huh? The land radically changed? What do you mean by that?

... you didn't mean by humans, right? Just ... in some other way?"
Anik asked, quite confused.

"Oh, no. Not at all", Timea said with a small chuckle. "No, these were natural changes, significant drops in temperatures, to be precise. Some of them long-lasting."

With the head severed, Timea moved back around Anik, and sat back down where she sat, before, and began removing the flesh from the skull. "In one case, this was caused by a mountains exploding, spewing out an exceedingly large cloud of ash into the sky. So large, that I'm not exactly sure where this event took place, exactly. In other cases, I'm not sure what caused it.

Knowing what was south helped me in these times, too, since the south was still tolerably warm."

"Oh. Woah." was all that Anik could say to express her feelings. She thought a little, then asked: "So ... was it similar to what is happening right here? Without the sun? I ... hope I never have to experience this again. The cold is annoying.

Anyways, at least where you were it was warm. I guess you were pretty lucky, then.
How long did it last? Longer than a humans lifetime?"

"Well, I could still see the sun from where I lived. But closer to the explosion site, I don't doubt the ash cloud blocked out the sun. Although everything in that radius would probably die before they could notice this", Timea explained.

"But to answer your second question; Some of these events lasted only a small portion of a human's lifetime. Two others, however, lasted generations. One even lasted long, even from my point of view. I hear this event covered the northern lands in ice. And I saw illustrations that suggest it forced creatures to develop radical adaptions. Like how polar bears are different from bears further south? Every creature was like this, it seemed.

I never experienced this first hand, of course, but I don't think it's too far fetched."

Anik thought for a bit about what Timea told her, this changing how she saw life, in some way. "This is ... I don't know. It certainly was a lot. You think that humans lived in the ice lands? ... I don't think I could live in such an environment. It does sound quite horrible. I would have tried to get south, as well. And generations ... I hope I never am stuck in something like this. At least traveling between worlds does give more possible ways to get away from something like that.

I certainly can believe that animals changed because of this. A warmer fur, right? I don't know what else is different about these polar bears."

"I'm not sure. But considering people from the north look different from the south, it certainly is possible. The further north a group of people live, the lighter they get, over the course of generations. ... Although none as pronounced as the people here." Timea trailed off for a moment, then shook her head. "But I digress."

With most of the meat cut away from the skull, Timea held it over the fire, while scraping off the bits that remained with her free hand, holding the skull steady between her feet. While doing so, she considered other things to say, but kept this for a later time. "Speaking of moving to different worlds, however, I do wonder just how wide spread this phenomenon is, and will be. I can't help but feel worried that looking for the place I'm after won't do much, if this becomes available to every man under the sun, on every world."

"Hmm ..." Anik made. "Well, considering that we ourselves did not know about it, despite other people being quite aware of the possibility ... I really doubt it will get wide spread. And ... I don't think, if we even find out how to manage this travel, and do not just ... go to our respective worlds, without a way to come back ... that we would tell people how to do it. We don't really have a reason to do so.

I hope that the world you want to move in will be peaceful all the time, though. I don't know if this is possible. But at least ... the time you lived on your world in peace, being able to do it there, as well.
I ... I still don't really know what I want in the end. But I think the worlds I want to go to have enough problems on their own. Nothing gets easier, if people get more advanced."

"We wouldn't tell people, certainly, I wouldn't. But we're not alone in being from another world. If any of the others find a way off of this world, they might tell other people about the method. I've reason to believe Cibyl knows how, already. And the ones that come and go as they please, it's well possible they know how. But even assuming all of this isn't so; It's still only a matter of time. It exists, which means it'll eventually be exploited." Timea blew a small sigh, then continued. "Ah, I suppose there isn't much use in worrying about this, now. There are too many variables to start this kind of speculation."
