I'd go with Sonic for sure. It's the only series I can think of which went from A grade games to completely broken, untested, badly designed, gimmicky bullshit games. It may be on it's way out of that, but it still has a looooong way to go to being anywhere near acceptable again, at least in my books.

Crash Bandicoot and Spyro also share this fate albeit to a slightly lesser degree, at least those franchises went through a bunch of different dev teams, what's Sonic Teams excuse?

Hm, surprised Laura Croft hasn't been mentioned.

While the upcoming reboot has me interested, according to a lot of fans the series is absolutely horrible when comparing newer games to the older titles.
That is why they decided to make a reboot instead of a sequel, the newer Tomb Raider games were mediocre at best

The movie industry has its actors, which are big, visible icons. The book industry has authors, which are the sole name on the front of the book. The game industry has nothing more than titles, which they can add numbers onto. Sure, there are the developers, but A. They are backroom rats in China/Japan's development, B. They don't get up-front exposure the same way.

When Titanic was a big success from Leonardo diCaprio, Inception was them making Titanic 2, the way the movies do.
Good point!

The foundation of every entertainment industry is the lowest common denominator. Hell, the only reason I rented Hot Tub Time Machine was because Lizzy Caplan's in it.

OT: Every franchise that has switched developers.

Am I the only one who enjoyed FF X, a lot of people seem to think VII was the last good one.

And my vote would go to CoD or WoW.
FF X is my favorite of the series, actually. I'm admittedly not the most avid of FF fans as I've only played 7,9,10, and about 12 hours of 12 before I realized how much I despised it. I adored X for its character development, the intricacies of Spira in the sub-text, and the overall story of a group of people trying their very best to end a never ending cycle of death and destruction that gripped their world.

That laughing scene was still horrible though.

Sonic I would say it just became unrecognisable although I do have good feelings about Generations after seeing a demo. A really beautiful green hill zone. Looks liek some nice old school Sonic action.

Final Fantasy also, I think I will stick with the Tales series and Dragonquest.
Sonic Generations looks good but doesnt play that good, there are some problems with knowing where the fuck you are taking Sonic, the scenario is a bit cluttered and makes it hard to see the path.

I agree, Final Fantasy was a good game, for its combat system. However, there are way too many negatives the tend to weight FFX in with the terrible. Such as the main protagonist, Tidus. That fool isn't even the main focus in the game and the entire time playing, he bitches and moans about how it is his story, when we all know the story is about Yuna.

The fable series looks like its happily sinking into the abyss. Fable 3 was dire and the next one (fable: the journey) looks even worse. Such a shame as I loved the first and thought the second was an improvement.

Assassins Creed on the other hand, I believe is getting steadily much better, with each game there has been an improvement.

I love Call of Duty (especially Modern Warfare) but I do find that with them releasing a new game every year, it does get pretty tiring. Plus the DLC is normally a waste, Call of the Dead was worht it I thought.

I didn't buy Dragon Age 2 because of all the bad press it had been getting. Eventually traded in and got it for £20, thought best play it safe. Are you kidding me!? I absolutely loved it! I thought it was a very good game, no idea why people have hated it so much! I thought there were several improvements from the last one. Granted there were some things that could have been changed but even the worst didn't partiuclarly upset me.

I'm gonna say, personally Mario,

I mean, it HAS sorta lost it's luster in the past few games... and I KNOW that people are gonna sh*t on me for this...

Remember, this is just what I think, ok...
I respect you opinion but I actually think Bowser's inside story and Super Mario Galaxy 2 where pretty decent games for their genre.

Nah I don't want to die horribly of liver poisoning lol. xD

I've always been curious if Team Sonic know they are shit. I mean maybe we should tell them face to face or somthing. Point it out so there is no confusion. Has anyone done that or are they just cocooned in a fantasy world of the early 90's where they are equal to Mario. Maybe we need to go in Morpheus style and rescue them.

Final Fantasy. There's just no contest at all. Sure, Call of Duty may be copy paste, but that's what the fanboys love. Squeenix, on the other hand, has decided to kick their fans in the collective balls repeatedly ever since Final Fantasy X.
I'm sure you forgot about Sonic... That shit never gets any better. Always gets worse...

It's hard to say with accuracy.

In terms of the biggest names falling the furthest, there are a few series that comes to mind.

Tomb Raider. Lara Croft used to be the poster girl for Video Games. Now she's a punch line. The newest title has a chance to change that, however I'll wait for the reviews.

Sonic The Hedgehog. This guy used to go toe to toe with Mario. MARIO. SEGA used to have it's own consoles, and actually had Nintendo on the ropes at one point. Now we have Sonic on every console imaginable, and his games hit the discount bins a week after launch. He's fallen so very, very, very, very far.

Command & Conquer. Command & Conquer 4 - 'nough said.

Tony Hawk. Pro Skater and it's sequel are undeniable classics. Pro Skater paved the way for an entirely new sub-genre of video games, and was in part responsible for the mild resurgence of the skating sub-culture. Few games can claim that. The last entry failed to sell 4,000 copies. The Hawk landed. Hard.

Unreal. The first is an all time classic. Tournament is an all time classic, and still played to this day. Unreal 2 disappointed. 2k3 disappointed. 2k4 delivered what 2k3 should have. Tournament 3 killed the series.

Final Fantasy. VII is often cited as one of the greatest games ever made. For each title higher you climb, the less fans there are to defend it. XIII isn't just a bad Final Fantasy title, it's a bad game - and is often used as the primary example when talking about the lack of interactivity in AAA games. Final Fantasy used to be the go-to RPG. Now it's a joke. And a bad one, at that.

World of Warcraft. It started with a bang, and rose to the be the most successful video game ever made. It's now an online joke, and it's entire player base shunned. It's the game that turned PC's most beloved developer into one of the industry's most hated companies. It might make a lot of money, but it's fallen far.

id series Quake, Doom, Wolfenstein. id's catalogue reads as a list of classic FPS. Hell, they perfected the style that every FPS developer has used since. The most recent entries in all of their series have left fans divided. RAGE looks set to bring id back in a big way.

Crysis. It went from being THE go to PC Game to being a console port in a single entry. Crysis is still loved. Warhead is still loved. Crysis Wars is still loved. Crysis 2 is shunned.

Grand Theft Auto. 1 and 2 were decent enough. III is an all time classic. Vice City is terrific. San Andreas is one of the greatest games ever made. IV is over-hyped and under performing. Relationship simulator + gun battles - humour - fun = disappointed fans.

Supreme Commander. The first is one of the greatest RTS Games ever made. It's stand alone expansion pack fixed a lot of what was wrong with the first. It's sequel destroyed the series, alienated fans and left it's developer with dwindling funding.

Guitar Hero. It used to be THE name in party gaming. Now it conquers images of 17 releases in 5 years.

James Bond. Goldeneye 007. Those words alone sends shivers up many a gamer's spine. It has failed to reach those lofty heights ever since, and now resides as one of the many train wrecks owned by Activision Blizzard.

Rainbow 6. THE strategy FPS. Now, it's a smoking crater where entertainment used to live.

Resident Evil. 4 is often called the greatest game ever made. 5 destroyed the series, alienated long standing fans and removed what little traces of the original remained. The 3DS versions look to bring Resident Evil back from the brink.

Call of Duty. Oh my. The most successful game series of all time. 4 is a masterpiece. The most memorable moment? The one without words, gunfire and a single drop of blood. A mushroom clowd grows in the distance. Children's voices echo around you. Fade to black. For each additional entry, the series has spat, pissed, shit and thrown up on fans and has become the standard industry business model: Do Not Innovate. Make less content. Charge more. Rape your customers. Call of Duty went from being the second coming of the FPS to being the most hated name in all of gaming.

They killed Ianto! *sniff* Killing Ianto makes me a sad Panda.

Oh I suppose if we're talking about games... Pokemon, to a degree. I still love the Pokemon games but I wish they'd just tweak the main formula a bit... just a little. I wouldn't say its the worst but its the franchise I'd like to see some change in.
Owen was a far worse character to kill off, I want him to come back!

Command & Conquer.

Red Alert 3 was already pretty average before Tiberian Twilight came along and dealt a killing blow by both removing or altering everything that made Command & Conquer what it was and also by just being generally mediocre. As a long time fan of the series it makes me sad to say this, but I really don't see the franchise recovering from that fiasco.
I reckon the downhill slide of the command and conquer series happened on the day of the liquidation of Westwood. Without them, the series has just become a slave to the corporation whore known as EA :(

(Though personally i still found Red Alert 3 and The Generals series to be fun, but they lacked the charm that was Westwood)

After Red Alert 3 though....that's where you'll find the real shit.

I'm gonna state the obvious one here and say Call of Duty, since what was once a pretty innovative game hasn't changed in 3 iterations in the series, and the next one doesn't look like it's gonna do anything either.

I'm also going to say Star Wars games. Instead of making the awesome games like Republic Commando and Battlefront they keep making crappy kids Star Wars games and now an MMO at the cost of the old Star Wars MMO, and personally I hate MMO's.

Well, obviously, the answer is Sonic the Hedgehog. There hasn't been a good console game since Adventure 2--well, I guess Heroes was alright. And the daytime stages in Unleashed were a blast.
And Colors and Sonic 4 were both great...

You know what? Screw the bandwagon. Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic '06 are the only bad games in the main series. Hopefully Generations will be the game to actually make people realize that this is still a good franchise.

Anyway, I would say Mortal Kombat, but the latest game was great.
Umm...Resident Evil 5 wasn't great...but the 3DS game is looking pretty good, and one "meh" game doesn't ruin a franchise. I haven't enjoyed a Final Fantasy game since FFX, but they obviously still have their fans. Hmm. Yeah, I guess I'll have to go with Final Fantasy, but in a "not for me anymore" way.
