To be honest, the battle system in XII was not all that bad, but the game as a whole still seemed to lack the magic of the older ones (for me, IX was the last that I really enjoyed.) I think XII was an improvement over the X and X-2. Hope you enjoy it.
I'll let you know what I think when I finally come around to trying it. :)

Right now... sort of, they're taking WAAYYY to long to release FFXIII and I have a feeling that it won't really be worth the time I waited for it.

It died at the end of IX when the the random final boss shows up, (although my FF lore is lacking so maybe he did somehow fit in the game and I just didn't realize it)

FFVII was the only one I liked. No real reason for that, I guess, but it's the only one that really captured my imagination.

I wouldn't say it died for me, but I really didn't like XII. I am waiting for XIII to see if they have effectively jumped the shark, or it was just a small anomaly.

Well...one can hope that the time it's taking for this game to come out is indication of the amount of effort being put into the game. It's been a long time but they started the thing on the PS2 but then had to redo it for the PS3 when they moved on...that alone might have taken up a good chunk of time. I don't expect it to be the next FF7, but I hope that those 5 years? of work has led to something a real good quality.

At XI and XII I got tired of it. V, VII and X were the most genius games in the series, but after X, it went downhill. God knows how FFXIII will be, but I can get a vague idea of how it is. But they seem to be putting so much work into it that there are two possibilities; either it will be awesome and blow everyone's shoes, socks and underwear off, or it's trying too hard, like an impotent man in bed, trying to convince his lady that he will come around soon enough, and that she isn't wasting her time when she could be humping Daikatana instead.

It was showing signs of dying during 10 and then had a heart attack in 12.
They can still resuscitate it though.
Thats what Kingdom Hearts was for.=)

It seems we all agree that XII sucked, but I think that XIII will be the killer if it doesn't deliver on the Final Fantasy feel.(Judging from trailers, it is not doing well with that.=( )

Best FF game that we all can agree on?

Tactics.

FFXI doesn't count for me (but if it did, that one) but it would have to be FFXII, you don't take out turn based combat AND/OR random encounters, its what made FF...well FF.

Also to anyone arguing with the random encounters bit i say this: "in YOUR games, you enter a small room and you have about, one or two enemys, you kill them, end of, right? But what if thats not what you want? With random encounters a small room still has infinte enemies, and at that, anywhere can be a battleground for infinte training. Besides don't you love the screen disappearing, then finding out what your about to fight?"

And to the people against turn based combat, i also say this "Bet you play a load of FPSs, right? Well tell me something, when your playing FF (if ever) how many times within an hour do you die? Well let me tell you something, with turn based combat, i can get a plan of attack, the curing, the items, the defence, and the attacks perfectly rounded before i even actually lay a hit, and ergo i tend to stay alive/beat strong badasses/keep heath up/use less items then needed etc. Now tell me where turn based combat is bad in that respect, without mentioning how slow it goes".

I've made my point i think.

5 minutes into the 1st time I ever tried one. I couldn't get into the attack animations of the game at all. I felt like I was playing Oregon Trail on an Apple IIe.
