Interesting, we had a conversation in school today about how it's not fair that there are ridiculously good scholarships solely for Native Americans in my province, and they need and average of like 75% to get it.

I just wish they wouldn't have scholarships based on race or gender, just give them to people who deserve them.

Either way, I guess I support this. Atta be Texas.

It's about damn time. Society gives the least sympathy to white male youth these days. Why? WE didn't cause slavery. WE didn't kill the Indians. That was all our ancestors' deal. If we're to ever move past the past, we need to start putting everybody under the same label: "People". I don't think scholarships based on gender, color, and sexual orientation should even exist. But those aren't going anywhere, so it's nice to see one institution trying to even the field a little bit.
I'm okay with this scholarship...

...but ancestors inflicted genocide on the Native Americans and enslaved the blacks for centuries, and now our generations simply refuse to deal with the after-effects. You cannot reverse centuries of genocide or slavery in four or five decades. Native Americans are still by far the worst off racial group in the US - just below blacks. The idea is that if they "work hard" they'll reverse their circumstances...is utter crap.

As a white guy, I find it incredibly annoying when white males act like their lives are so hard because of their skin color. If your life is hard, it is likely because of almost anything BUT your white skin color. So the media makes us white guys out to be the bad guys and people may complain at us sometimes...damn. Life is sure difficult.

So..get over it. I'm white. I don't come from a rich family. Hell, my family and I came close to losing our house. But you know what? All my black friends at school are just as screwed as I am for debt. The kids I know who pay their bills with scholarships and maybe some coins from their change jar are all white.

It is possible that white males may one day fade from their positions as the dominant social group in the US. Who shall take over from there? Latinos? Blacks? Women? The gays? Who cares?

I like the last option though. The Year of the Queer has begun!

Well I think those hating on scholorships based on race are slightly off as they are ment to provide groups who were historically disadvanteouged to catch up and their is still cathing up to do, equality for women and people of various racis is not yet finished, and the scholarships often allow for more equal representation in different fields.
Think of your parliment/government women are 50%(probably ever so slightly more if I remember my demographics) of the population and how many seats they have, number of judges, doctors, corporate executives these fields and many others are still dominated by one particular group

As a white male myself, I'm basically restricted to scholarships based on my dad's status as a career military NCO. I've got almost all my scholarships based on the fact that my dad is in the Air Force, and not because I'm smart. Kinda pisses me off.

FINALLY! I am sick of getting the shaft because I am a white male. This program sounds fantastic.

This had better juts be to prove a point. Giving people money because of their race is wrong no matter how you look at it. I don't care if the inner city is full of poor, black people, they should get the money because they're poor, not because they're black.

Sure. If minorities can have scholarships only they can apply for, and women can. Why can't caucassion/males have something?

So what is the problem with this? I can't find crap for scholarships because I am a white-male from a middle class family. The only scholarships I get are merit based, I can't get any thing related to engineering. I know girls in the same type of situation as me, but are able to get quite a bit in scholarships because they are also becoming engineers.

I can't really complain though, my life is pretty regular in a stable way.

I love the idea. I'm in the midsts of scholarship searches and applications right now, and when I look at listings and sort by amount, basically everything over $5,000 a year has the requirements that I must be black, Hispanic/Latino, or Native American. Many of the smaller ones require that I be a woman. As a white, middle-class guy with no disabilities, I basically qualify for jack shit because so many not-from-the-college merit based scholarships have racial restrictions.

In other words, "being white" is the only demographic requirement that I have never seen for scholarships, and it's nice to finally see one.

Surely they could award scholarships based on individual cases, not race?

Also: since 42% is not the majority, I take it that at least 42.1% of the other people there are of the same race? As opposed to, they're no longer the majority when all the other races are combined (which is a stupid way to measure things - like when people stick the consoles together and then say PC sales are so much lower).
White males are likely still the "majority" but they are not the "super-majority" these terms get confused quite often.

As in, "more white males than any one other thing" but not "more than half of everyone is a white male".

"One group they feel has been left out of college scholarship programs - white men." Whaaat? Um.. okay. Although I have to say that, like... 9 out of 10 of my white, male friends that applied for scholarships--and deserved them--got them, but okay.

In my experience with trying to find scholarships that I have the ability to possibly obtain, it seems that ANY race/gender is able to get one, except that most of the ones available are course-specific, that's all. *shrug*

This seems really, really weird to me. Scholarships should just be neutral, man. MONEY FOR ALL (who have good grades but can't necessarily afford post-secondary).

True, so all black/latino scholarships are then inherently racist. As long as these exist, white males do have a disproportionately small amount of scholarships open to them until this came along.

People, people, please! Lets just end racial scholarships altogether! Race can only not be an issue when people ignore it as a limiting factor, not place special emphasis on certain races to promote some bastardized equality.

Scholarships based on merit. Scholarships based on need. More of those please. Thanks.

This is actually hilarious. 25% Caucasian? Barack Obama, our first "black" president is racially eligible to apply for this scholarship. So are his children. A large chunk, maybe even a majority of African-Americans could qualify. It would be funny if someone won this one and a NAACP one.

I'm also wondering what is considered "Caucasian"? Can a Kurd or Armenian fresh off the plane go for this, being from the Caucasus and all? How about some Iranian fellow from Tabriz? Is there some solid definition that they have?

Sounds fair to me.

It isn't depriving any other programs out there, and it seems that even a mixed race person can get on it (i.e. half black, half white, half chinese half white) etc.

Hell, barack Obama could have got on this scholarship!

So it doesn't seem unfair, radical or racist. Education is great; and so are scholarships and grants for all.

That would be great, if the "merit based" scholarships actually DID that. There's a trend towards neutralizing the race and gender bias from "merit based" scholarships, but until they do, it is currently a fact that more white males receive these scholarships than their representation in the general public. Basically, if (as someone claimed above) 42% of the population is a white male, then assuming all things being equal, 42% of scholarship winners should be white males, give or take within a margin of error.

This isn't the case however, and whether it is because of discrimination within the selection, or systemic discrimination that isn't the fault of the selectors, white males are, simply by being white males, more likely to get free money than other people.

So this idea that there's some social justice inherent in a scholorship just for white males is being completely ignorant to the fact that many scholarships already do that, but simply don't state it.

Seriously tho, if you're a white male complaining about being 'disadvantaged'... go to hell. You're an self-entitled idiot who doesn't actually know how to leverage his own inherent advantage that society STILL gives you over everyone else in numerous subtle ways.

i think what people forget is that just because most positions of power(CEOs, high positions in Government) are filled with white men this does not make all white men rich assholes, some are just born without money, the same way black or Hispanics are.

I await your indignation
Why would I be indignant? As a white middle class male from a third generation college family the list of scholarships are relegated to those awarded for academic merit. There are already scholarships that use race, gender, religion, family history and socioeconomic status as requisites for earning them. Is it really unthinkable that, just because I am white and male and middle class that it would be wrong to award a scholarship using those things as a set of criteria?

No matter how you award a scholarship, the moment you apply any qualifications to the process you start excluding people. At this moment you will find hundreds of scholarships that will exclude people based on where they live, how much their parents earned, their GPA, their record of charitable services, their ability to write, their ability to perform on a test, their ability to win a beauty pageant (Miss America as an example), their athletic ability, if their parents went to college, the field of study that they want to pursue and so forth.

That a scholarship has the audacity to award funds to those who demonstrate financial need, a higher than usual GPA (most scholarships have a lower limit of 2.5) and happen to be of a particular ethnicity and gender is appalling. Exactly as appalling as any number of UNCF scholarships (as an example).
