I'll tell you some reasons why I do and don't like what I would call Emo kids. I like them because they're very accepting, very friendly, are colourful and don't mind looking a little girly just because that's what they want to wear. I don't have any Emo friends, but most of them I know are very nice.
I don't like them because they get bloody furious if you don't know their exact chosen term (scene kid? anti-scene kid? Pseudo-love-goth? Screw you, kid). Some live only in their stereotype world and don't become their own person because they want to fit in. They think if you work out to keep yourself healthy that you're "a jock". That's not everyone, but I've seen those all happen before.
The reason I think other people hate them is because the whole culture is about being vulnerable and emotional, and it's easy to put down someone like that. Bullies see a skinny, malnourished kid listen to music about feelings, so they see an easy target. It makes some people feel better about themselves, like they're making the physical manifestation of their own hidden weakness cry. Other groups like metalheads and goths feel like their style is being diluted even though a careful observer knows who wants to be what.
