If there is no alternative to save that guys life than sure why not? Anything to save a life.

Let me see if I can put this as clearly as possible:

FUCK AND NO.

I'm not even sure I'd do that for someone I loved.

I'd probably make like I will, then throw whatever cutting implement I have been handed at the homicidal weirdo.
There's no guarantee I'll hit him, but there's a better chance of that than there is of some lunatic letting his victim go if I hack off an arm.

However, if I DID know for definite that this stranger would be freed if I dropped a few pounds, then sure, why not.
I'm not particularily attached to any of my limbs.

I love how we're all so skeptic of the bad guy and naturally assume that no matter what we do, one of us is going to die.

For the record, no, I wouldn't either. In this kind of scenario, it never works out afterwards...

No, for one reason and one reason only, I wouldn't be able to play my Playstation and PC.
Yeah thats pretty harsh... I'd be majorly depressed if I had an injury that stopped me playing PC games effectively.

Not only would I not cut it off to save a stranger, but neither would I do it for myself as long as the alternative wasn't slow and painful. Cutting off a limb is an almost guaranteed death unless you can make it to a hospital in under a minute, and even if you survived your quality of living would be terrible because you're unable to do simple everyday things.

Hell no. I don't know the other person, thus I have zero emotional attachment to them, and who's to say they won't die anyway somehow? There's no point me cutting my arm off to save someone from a bullet to the head, if he's going to die of AIDS or a heart attack tomorrow morning instead.

To be honest, I probably wouldn't even cut off a limb to save someone I knew. I'd only do it if my own life was in danger, and there would have to be absolutely zero chance of me escaping death without cutting off a limb before I even considered that. Call me selfish if you want, but I've always believed in looking out for number one. It's a selfish world. Deal with it.
This. Over and over.

Only if the stranger was someone I knew.

Then I'd definately do it.
How many complete strangers do you know?

OT: No I don't believe I would do that.

Also whats with the people questioning the circumstances? I thought the whole point of a hypothetical situation was that you assume things will go the way outlined as a fact and make a decision based on that. The question is clearly trying to get feedback on whether you value a limb or a complete stranger's life more, not whether or not your trust hypothetical crazy kidnappers putting you in moral dilemmas.

Depends.

If I can choose what limb and if I can be absolutely sure that it would save the other person, then yes, I would chop off the lower part of my right leg since it's already screwed up.

If it was an elderly person though, I would ask for the opinion of said person before doing anything.

Do I get to pick which limb? Man, what a tough choice. I guess I would go with.... my right arm (I'm left-handed).
Why arm mate, prosthetics for legs are much better, just cut off the left one, replace it later with a prosthetic and you'll be pretty much fine.

That said, cutting off a limb is dangerous on it's own, doing it with a hacksaw or sth in an insanitary environment and not knowing a damn thing about how to do it is likely to just get me killed, so that considered, I'd likely refuse.

And before the rest of you jump to yes's, note that next to losing a limb, you're also enduring pretty much the worst kind of torture (you're cutting through bone) to go through something like that. To make an analogous situation, if you were captured/imprisoned and tortured by someone with no moral code, would you reveal an information leading to someone else's (who is a complete stranger) death to stop all the torture and go free? I'm guessing most would go yes on that (considering trained and loyal soldiers betray their superiors in those circumstances, leading to a lot more than one death and those guys are much more used to pain than you are - also the 'reward' they usually get for spilling the info is in the best case indefinite imprisonment or a quick death to end the pain), which is pretty much the same as saying a no to the OP's question.

Honestly? No

It would hurt

Even if it didn't hurt, I'd still be greviously injured

Even if, somehow, the weirdo had rigged me up with stuff so it didn't hurt and, say, clotted instantly and didn't kill me...still going with no

I like my limbs. I use all of them, and to remove one would destroy the life I have currently. And you might say "sure, but if you don't, his life is destroyed COMPLETLEY"

Well, I guess I'm a coward then. I don't care. I wouldn't do it

And how exactly do you survive after cutting one of your limbs by your own self? Best possible outcome: death.

Hmm... probably not, no.
Depends on if I can choose the limb, and if the person I'm saving is a nice guy, or an absolute dickhead.
