I can't believe NOBODY has said David FUCKING Gilmour. BY FAR one of the greatest guitarists in rock history. I notice that there are plenty of shredders mentioned, and I agree that guys like Yngwie Malmsteen are amazing, but in all fairness, there are a lot of people who can play fast. Maybe not AS fast as Yngwie, but close, anyhow.
What Gilmour does with the guitar, on the other hand, is a truly unique gift. Very few guitarists are able to convey so much passion and emotion in their playing, exhibited by Pink Floyd classics such as "Time", "Dogs", or the very well known "Comfortably Numb".
That being said, Jimmy Page, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix are also part of that group who's talent I feel transcends blazing solos into a deeper, more emotional form of musicianship. Props to Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo as well for their sheer originality.
