I can't believe NOBODY has said David FUCKING Gilmour. BY FAR one of the greatest guitarists in rock history. I notice that there are plenty of shredders mentioned, and I agree that guys like Yngwie Malmsteen are amazing, but in all fairness, there are a lot of people who can play fast. Maybe not AS fast as Yngwie, but close, anyhow.

What Gilmour does with the guitar, on the other hand, is a truly unique gift. Very few guitarists are able to convey so much passion and emotion in their playing, exhibited by Pink Floyd classics such as "Time", "Dogs", or the very well known "Comfortably Numb".

That being said, Jimmy Page, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix are also part of that group who's talent I feel transcends blazing solos into a deeper, more emotional form of musicianship. Props to Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo as well for their sheer originality.

He's from The Doors, plays some fun riffs. Lennon flew by me too, don't feel bad.
The Doors? Was that the band that did Break On Through To The Other Side and Light My Fire? If so, then yes, that man is one hell of funky guitarist.

Also, I forgot Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler 0_0.

Django Reinhardt, for playing amazing things with only two fingers.

Jimi Hendrix, for pioneering many of today's standard techniques.

Eric Clapton, for being good enough to be called God

Jimmy Paige, for ... well... just plain rocking.

Not only because I like Children of Bodom, but there's just something about his playing that fascinates me. It's fast, melodical and extremly technical, too.

Hells to the yes!

(everyone else mentioned is good too)

Angus Young of AC/DC.

I saw him in concert a couple days back. He gave a great show. Even had a 10 minute solo.

Buckethead. I'm a sucker for music without vocals and it's amazing how much emotion and passion BH can put into his music. He doesn't do any stage theatrics, and he doesn't do anything off-stage in the media or social spotlight to garner attention. Hell, he wears an expressionless mask whenever he plays.
He's the most stoic guitarist I've ever known, yet his music speaks volumes about him. He's not an entertainer who happens to play music, he's a musician, and nothing else. That's not to say other guitarists are bad or anything, I just like BH's enigmatic and reserved persona.
good call. hes probably the best soloist iv ever heard.

my favorites have to be Daniel Ash (from Bauhaus and Love & Rockets), the Edge, Paul Leary of Butthole Surfers, and Jack White.
