Iron Maiden was the band that sold metal for me. I never really even listened to music untill a friend of mine at 5th grade listened to them at school, and I was instantly in love with them.

Buckethead was the first for me, "Jump Man" on his album Monsters and Robots.
This guy isnt really metal but listening to his videos on youtube linked me to other metal bands which I got into.

The main band that got me in to metal was Avenged Sevenfold because of listening to Beast and the Harlot on GH2.

I started with Venom and Yngwie Malmsteen....

....which lead to Dissection, Burzum, and Darkthrone.

EDIT: Oh, and I can't forget to add Suffocation and Deicide. XD

Rammstien, when I was like 8. But they didn't get me into metal because I hate the genre apart from a few bands.

Can't remember which was the first, but Metallica and Man O War was the first metal I was conscious of hearing.

For me it was Limp Bizkit (though not exclusively placed in the metal genre, still classed as metal).
But I'll always remember THPS2 on PS1 for introducing me to such great bands as Rage Against The Machine and Papa Roach when I was a young lad, great times

first metal band I ever bothered listening to was Iron Maiden - specifically, their Death on the Road live album, or whatever it was called.

I don't really like Iron Maiden any more.

Def Leppard. And then I wanted to hear something heavier and less gay. That's when I got into Judas Priest (ok, so they aren't less gay than Def Leppard.) And then I wanted to listen to something heavier. I started listening to Metallica. Then I wanted to hear a little more variety and I found Demiricous. Now I have library with 100+ metal bands of nearly every sub-genre.

RAMMSTEIN!

Also a few Type O Negative songs if they count (I say a few of their songs because I don't like most of their stuff but the few songs I like are really good).

I'm still not really into metal but I like quite a lot of Metal bands (check out Devin Townsend, they rock: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M06vB9YeIjw ) and I'm starting to get more into it.
