Just heard this on Fox. Apparently 70% of people living in England, Australia, France, Germany and New Zealand want to, and I quote "Dismantle their health care system and start anew." Yes, I know this is bullshit but I'm curious how people of these nations feel about our media's portrayal of them, especially with all this health care hoo ha going on right now. Funny? Sad? Offensive? Also, do you know any people from any of these countries that actually do want to "dismantle the health care system and start anew."?
i stopped at "just heard it on fox" from experience if its on fox its either hugely exaggerated or a blatant lie. that station should get no credibility.

That's worse than saying "so I just made up," for all the credibility Fox has. I don't even find them particularly offensive anymore, just sad that there are still people in the world who believe them.

As for their poll, it's possible it's true, everyone has their own idea how their country's health system should be run. It doesn't necessarily mean they would prefer a pre World War 1 system like America has.

Read the second sentence and I think you will find that we agree >.> The debate here is not about Fox's credibility.

England's health care is bad for the taxes we pay, BUT nowhere need as bad as it is in America.

If I'm sick and I have no money I can still see a Doctor.

If I break my leg it's treated free.

If I need an operation, it's done free.

So I'm happy enough.

Obama has been called a Nazi communist (yeah, I know...) for proposing to improve his nation's healthcare system. The Republicans and Fox are against this, but it may not be obvious why. The real reason, to my mind, has nothing to do with mixing up Socialism with Communism (after all the U.S. already have Firemen that are in the Government's employ and no one says that they should go back to the days of private firemen like in the film "Gangs of New York"), or libertarianism or issues of "right to life" (which the Republican's use to whip up the religious conservatives that blindly follow them). No, the reason Obama is getting all this hate is Racism, pure and simple.

Not racism that is directed at him for being black, but racism because a fair healthcare system (like they have in Canada or the U.K. or France) paid for through Federal taxation (rather than private insurance) and automatically treating every injured person without quibbling over where they were covered for this or that operation would bring about the end of the underclass and all of those largely poor racial minorities living without health insurance of any kind would be on a level playing field with the middle-class whites (education notwithstanding, of course).

The Republicans want to keep the Black and Mexican and Puerto Rican minorities sick and cowed as I think they are frightened of them.

More so that they have a President who may well represent them.

UK here. I just want the government to stop dicking around with it and give it the funding it needs rather than sharing the taxes around with private hospitals too. I love the NHS, great idea. I just hate politicians.

Fox News is the news network which managed to have enshrined in law the fact that they can lie knowingly on air and describe it as news.

Being English, the health care system is far from brilliant, but thats not due to the doctors or nurses, its down to the politicians who insist, on having an army of managers and supervisors who have no medical training overseeing every single last aspect of every conceivable area within the NHS. My mum works as a Midwife, and I hear some proper horror stories. Needless to say, its the politicians, not the system itself. Starting anew would take weeks maybe longer, and terminal patients, pregnant woman and the just plain old wont wait for that.

And then after this they proceeded to tell you how Obama made a pact with the spirit of Lenin through an Islamic ritual to bring communism to America?
Well it was all done fairly quickly. Under the guise of a foreign handshake which, on closer examination, appears to be the elusive "terrorist fist-bump" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-TG6jorKfs].
Did you read any of the comments on that video? Regular youtube trash yes, but, there was a gem:
At the very moment Obama's campaign began, someone tossed a pile of straws at Fox News and said "Here, start grasping."

That link more than made my day, thank you so much.

OT, the UK health system isn't a perfect system, but, it's gives the population something to continuously complain about, the the UK population loves to complain, so it's perfect for us.

that and 70% of people would be to lazy/not give a shit.
In the UK, well they I quite like the NHS actually........my family would struggle to pay to go to doctors and dentists otherwise (i lived in America for a while too)doctors in either country still are just guessing/dont know what do to to fix your problems half the time, but meh. You have to pay extra in the UK to get your teeth polished tho. But bear in mind America dental care is VERY expensive.

No, we just hate HOW it is done not that it merely exists. Literally NO ONE in Britain is calling for the dismantling of the NHS.

Most of us Brits appreciate it is there as no matter how poor, how sick or WHATEVER circumstances, the medical system MUST treat you.

What is hated about the NHS is how bloody shoddy it all is, they may keep you alive but you will likely not get the most comfortable nor least painful nor most timely treatment.

But thankfully private healthcare is not outlawed in our great free country (unlike Canada, ya boo sucks) and to spite every Briton getting free healthcare with the NHS that their taxes pay for no matter what, millions still sign up for private health insurance.

Ultimately, either a pure Objectivist private healthcare or pure Socialised public healthcare are BOTH doomed to fail. They need each other to work.

A good healthcare system has both public and private, Canada are utterly mad to outlaw private medicine with their own elected politicians being caught going on "medical vacations" to USA and UK for more timely and comfortable treatment. Sure it is at a cost but if you can afford it to avoid that pain, discomfort and unbearable wait is money well spent.

Fox News is a den of deceitful scum.

Truth means nothing to them. Their only objective is garnering public support for the vested interests of Rupert Murdoch and his fellow, massively rich, social peers.

70% of people may say they're not completely happy with their healthcare, but I bet if you told those people their healthcare was going to be privatised you'd hear the scream from the moon. Or whatever other planet the people at Fox News are living on.
I think you've cracked it there.

I'm sure fox have found some statistic somewhere asking if people think the NHS can be improved, then just changed it to 'this % of britons hate the NHS'

I've only heard of one person who actually wants to shut the NHS (unsurprisingly, an exceedingly rich conservative), who got completely savaged in the news after mentioning it.

Ask people in the street about it, and i'd guarantee nobody would want to scrap it, but most people will say it can be improved
(main problem being the stats and targets obsessed culture encouraged by the current government, leading to a ballooning management system at the expense of actual healthcare)

Emergency medical care (like broken legs, cuts, etc) are free in America. Every hospital receives federal funding on the remit that they cannot turn away or refuse to treat any injured patients who arrive. (Anyway, emergency medical care is cheap, it is serious surgery and treatment for chronic illnesses that cost a lot.)

The problem in America is the "grey areas". People who are not in poverty (they have medical cover provided by govt) yet are not rich enough for full health coverage so are stuck in a middle ground.

That is basically what Obama is trying to do, fill in the gaps between America's already extensive socialised healthcare system and the private healthcare. By European standards it is not a very socialised system at all.

For England, I'm surprised if it's as low as 70%. It's an ancient tradition here to whine that the country is 'going down the tubes' when engaged in any kind of political discussion. The trick is to be more specific. I imagine the survey (assuming Fox actually conducted one), was along the lines of 'Do you approve of the state of healthcare in the UK?'. The answer to that is a foregone conclusion; any survey conducted in the UK will find that nobody approves of anything.

Well, I hate my local surgery where my GP is. My GP is an awesome guy and a brilliant doctor, the receptionists however, are EPIC fail. Everytime you call up they just ask you to call back at half 8 the next morning. To which they usually get an earful of abuse.

So actually, my healthcare system is fine. Just the people running it seem a bit dippy and insufferable.

There was also the incident when I walked into hospital with a very clearly broke hand, and the receptionist looked at me and said "So, what seems to be the problem?"

Idiots.
