Either way, it's not dependent on the players skill but on a mixture of player tactics and sheer luck (as a mage I cast a simple heal spell over 20 times and it didn't work once. I CRY BULL SHIT!)

The only major game I hate more than morrowind is HL2.
Exactly why I liked it. Not that I dislike needing skill to play something, but Morrowind was more of a chillout game. Just run(or fly) around, show your awesomeness by successfully shooting some scamps with your Dunmer crossbow (like you said with your experience with healing, it's seriously hindered at low levels, so I just used my crossbow as often as I could to increase my skill, and after almost reaching a frustration limit, it starts hitting more often. that's when you feel like you've actually mastered a skill).

The only thing I really disliked in Morrowind is the uselessness of potions and the blandness of some NPCs.

Also, I just realized how similar Might and Magic 7 (or 6 or 8 for that matter) and Morrowind are. And guess what I'm playing right now. Just can't get enough of adventures I guess. Just feels awesome casting fly and then raining Meteor Shower death upon groups of montsters.

that's it, I've decided. I will traverse Vvardenfell and kill every disgusting khajiit scum n'wah.

a hint for newbies, don't go installing mods until you've played the game for a while, except maybe for Better Heads and Better Bodies. seriously, vanilla morrowind is pretty good, don't miss out on it because you've downloaded some terrible floating mobile base. we're watching you....... scum

I remember when I first played it, all the interesting quests in Seyda Neen I ALWAYS do on every new playthrough, hiding atop the lighthouse to spy on that woman etc., finding the scrolls of Icarian Flight, thinking 'man, awesome', bu also thinking 'they can't have made the other towns as interesting as this, they're just trying to suck me in.'

Oh yeah.

Just so you know, you can beat the game in 10 minutes. No need to bother leveling or doing any side quests, because the geniuses that programmed this never put in any logic to make sure you did various quests or were of a certain level before killing the end boss.

You can find the runthrough on youtube.
The video I saw was an obvious mod as
the guy didn't use any fortify/restore health potions and then wielded Keening and Sunder without his health dropping. Keening and Sunder are two weapons where 'resist magica' has no effect, they always win eventually! Also, as a level 1 character, he connected with every swing of the weapon........and that just doesn't happen at level 1, not even against rats, let alone all the Dagoths

I'll have a look at a few more speedruns though, but I always spot holes and obvious mods, I spent thousands of hours exploiting the game without mods!

I am all for games that are not linear, but to have no checks and balances in them is too much. I mean, in a RPG to be level 1 or 2 and be able to beat the end boss of a game is a bit too ridiculious. When you spend 40 hours developing your character and you find out you put all that time in for no reason because I could have had the same result after 10 minutes. What's the point in doing any other quests or earning any other items after that?
How could you have had the same result? Woo, you killed Dagoth Ur. Grats. You've completed about... 0.01% of the game (literally). And you're level 1. And you're just about naked. Now what are you going to do, quit? If so, you never understood the game to begin with.
What this man said. While I did not finish the game (follow the main quest), I do remember trying to defeat Dagoth Ur, and it's not that hard. I've had more trouble getting through an underwater cave just to get some silly boots than engaging Dagoth Ur. I see beating the game as exploring Vvardenfell, earning your equipment and battle scars. It's just so satisfying having your own customized character with every bit of armor of different colour, make and with different enchantments. Or making epic spells.

Art design in Morrowind is far from the generic fantasy setting we got in Oblivion. I loved the overall look. Everythin was a bit insectoid or fungal.

Wolves? Pffft get me some cthulu faced nix-hounds.

Horses? Unbelievable! Where's my giant insect, steered by 'manipulating internal organs?'

Cliff Racers? ... Not cool Morrowind, not cool at all. The gnats of Morrowind, only noisier... And buggier, despite being pterodactyls.

And if you're complaining about Morrowind being non-linear it's like throwing yourself onto railway lines as a child and complaining because you won too quickly.
Holy crap, I completely never thought about that. That's why they feel sooo different. While there are some monsters from Morrowind, Oblivion is just some bland generic medieval place. What happened to my Bunglers Bane, Bethesda? Or to the slightly arabic setting? Or the cthulhu monsters? Oblivion would be so much more awesome if you would be able to steer a Stilt Strider.

I remember stepping outside the Office for the first time. The tutorial ended with "Good Luck."

I sat for a few moments, bemused by the 'do stuff' attitude the game just said. I walked towards Fargoth and gave the man (mer?) his ring and did some trading.

Still not really knowing what to do next.

I loved that first piece. It was like a just-released prisoner should feel, alone and abandoned. From that point onward, I loved the entire game. It was a little vague sometimes on the actual goals (I only managed to finish the game on my seventh playthrough. Didn't discover the Great Houses until the tenth.) but that was good. It meant I discovered things even after I thought I had seen it all.

The game was pure awesomeness. And even though I love Oblivion, it just can't reach Morrowind's level of greatness.

Hey buddy Alchemy is the most powerful skill in the game. It's the fastest legitimate way to go from zero to godhood.

To anyone who said the combat sucked, or anyone planning to get into the game...

Try Combat Enhanced. It requires Morrowind Enhanced which might be a pain to install (don't remember) but it adds a few unlockable comboes for each weapon type. (doesn't solve the "miss" problem but adds variety to otherwise boring melee combat)

Plus, y'know, dismemberment.

welp, just started another game of morrowind. pure mage ************.
running Galsiah's Character Development, don't really know why. anyone used GCD before?

morrowind good game.
Good luck with your pure mage run! I never had the guts to do it, I always took a weapon skill. GCD will make it much easier though. It adds magicka regen, doesn't it? I guess it'll give you a break for the first few levels before you start nuking entire towns at a time

Ok, so this is probably a result of finally putting it in at like midnight one night when I was tired already, but is there a way to remap the black and white buttons to like the shoulder buttons, and I was just being thick?
I decided to pick it up cuz it was $5 in the bargin bin, lol. And my friends playing Oblivion have commented many times on their fond memories.

yeah, there's a decent amount of magicka regen. I think its rate is some calculation of willpower or intelligence, but it gives mages lower strength, endurance, health, and weapon skills to compensate. but I think you start off with much more magicka, so it all weighs up.

I mainly got GCD so that the level caps were removed. I think it also kinda stops me from cheating, since apparently when your stats are calculated again, it resets them to what they *should* be.

never really played as a mage before. I mostly sneak around with a spear.

I almost blew this game off because of the graphics. That would have been a huge mistake, there's tons of mods for that.
Don't supose you have a website you use for the mods?

Im really bad when it comes to the modding thing.

Lets just say "theoreticly", I had a pirated version of the game.
Could I still get the graphic upgrade mods? If so, how?
Ten bucks man. Ten bucks for a great game from a company that hasn't screwed you over with copyright protection junk.
Have some gamer decency!

Still, without the Better Bodies mod, the female characters freak me out a little with their babie-like appearance...

Well, I guess there's only so much that you can try maximize, but I tried to get interested in alchemy, but I always ended up in weak potions. Though after playing a few other games, I realize that buff potions can really help you a bunch. I now realize why there's a shitload of alchemy ingrediends just lying about. Like fuckin' Kwama eggs. Man, I hated that crap.
But I could never even buy any decent potions, just some cheap crap. I'll try it out next time I play Morrowind.
