I remember when games cost $30. then they were $40. Then $50. Then $60.

I realise the technology is improving, but shouldn't that mean games get cheaper? Calculaters used to cost a good $100, and if you include inflation thats probably $140 nowadays.

To produce a copy of a game, it costs around a dollar. The profit margin is a little ridiculous, but millions are spent to produce a game. At least, unlike record companies, game companies lower their ridiculous prices once the games been out a while.

What I like to call "Torrent Discount"

Seriously, they make a game that's graphics heavy with crappy gameplay, and then put a $60 price tag on it...

I like to wait until it goes on sale or the price drops. Unless a game has the words "half-life" in the title, there's no way I'm dropping $50 on it.

For a brand new game, I bought L4D2 from day one and it only cost me about 40£. That's pretty good for a brand new game.

Honestly I have it sweet. New games very rarely venture over 50£ so I'm mostly good when it comes to buying new games.

But for the rest of you, yeah. Quite overpriced, especially NZ and Austrailia. They got majorly screwed on this one.

Aye, me too and also that some 2nd hand games sell for the same price as a recent release in some stores.

When considering purchasing Bayoneta it dawned on me...$73.50 for a new game...really???
This is Canadian price, so maybe there is a different gauge for the customer pricing in otehr regions, such as the U.S.
But the question is is it worth it to spend nearly 1/4 of my console's (PS3) value on a single game with a average game play of 8 to 10 hours at most? And this question goes to all new games coming out, are they actually worth the ever creepying price point? And well the bubble eventually burst and cripple the industry?

Your opinion
New games cost more to make, thats how it is. Not just because of the economy, but because of things like HD graphics, more compelling storyline, and the demand for online capabilities and updates. These put together put a bigger burden on a developer compared to the last generation of games, with new hardware, new software, and so on. However, your point that games are X amount of the console value is really something to think about, and something publishers should consider when pricing games. $60 USD is not something set in stone. It's just what they do, because they can. If games get any more expensive than that for standard editions, the games industry is going to be in trouble.

Who's going to pay $X for a console, $X for a game, and than maybe $X for online play? If prices continue to go up as they do? (Probably many, but if everything goes up $10 next generation, people will be looking at that new game saying "ill just replay my old games, i have to eat")

Fixed. Yeah it sucks over here. We pay 90-120 dollars for new games. And considering our currency is at the moment 95 US cents per dollar and on the rise it's completely unjustified. But, as a sarcastic man once said "I like to call it the having-better-beaches tax."

+1 internets for the reference.

I just looked in the new Argos catalogue (UK) and a few examples:

Modern Warfare 2 - £50
Blur - £47
Alan Wake - £43

How can they charge 47 for Blur?! I didnt think they hyped Blur up enough to be considered a AAA title.

Oh, it was Yahtzee. Though my second guess would have been an Aussie MP. :)
But having read your post again, 90-120 US Dollars is a huge amount of money for a new game. Here in Blighty, we'd expect to pay about $65 tops for a brand spanking new game.

I can imagine that. Especially with the nickel and dime treatment Gamestop is infamous for dishing out to it's patrons when they want to trade in games to help pay those crazy prices.
