Damage all the way.

My New Vegas character got his bag full of revolvers, lever action rifles and snipers.

Neither. Whats the use of firepower or fire rate if you can't hit the target, therefor One prefers the fallowing 1accuracy 2firepower 3ROF

Any person decent at mathematics will tell you that the perfect balance of both yields the highest dps.
That doesn't make it the most effective weapon.

Have you played counterstrike?

Awp is rage fuel.
That is true, burst damage is a big factor if the damage is high enough.

The purpose of a weapon, no matter how weak, is to cause damage.
Therefore, it is the primary factor.

Firerate...because once you reach a certain point, individual damage and accuracy don´t matter anymore. You just pump out a stream of lead more destrcutive then a laser...and looking like one when spiked with tracers!
"Oh what´s that? Your rifle has a basedamage stat of 300? I only have 20...what? You can only fire 10 RPM? DUDE, I can go 3500 RPM and have a 5000 round container in my Blackhawk, so fuck you."
When not in a Blackhawk or having a rotary cannon handy, LMGs tend to do the trick.

Also, I´m the close range encounter guy, and an SMG going 900-1200 RPM with a big magazine is still going to be a shitton more usefull in ranged engagements then a shotgun, which are always underpowered in most Videogames.

Also, more Dakka. Because you can never have enough.

There is also a reason why guns on Aircraft tend to be rotary cannons, because with that kind of lead going down range, something IS bound to hit. And if you saw the GAU-8 in action once, you don´t argue about damage anymore XD
To me, a crucial stat is "Damage per Second", how much damage can I get out in how much time. What is individual shot damage gonna do if you have to nail EVERY shot in order to kill slightly faster then some dude spraying you with 30 rounds in the same time, of which only 3-4 need to hit to kill you.

rate of fire, sure damage is good. But if your gun has a low rate of fire it can be very unreliable. Any gun with a high rate of fire and a good amount of accuracy is great.

Ha, it really depends on the game. If we're talking about more realistic shooters, or something like Left 4 Dead where zombies go down easy, then I'll take RoF over outright damage. However, if the higher rate of fire means a huge drop in accuracy I'll take something a little slower but more precise. If we're talking games like Timesplitters, where all the baddies can take a few hits and keep on coming, then I'll take higher damage of shotties or rockets.

Area of effect and knockback... but I'll just say damage. Close enough.
Okay, I'm a sucker for those kinds of weapons too. Grenades, mines, gravity hammers, etc. are tons of fun.

That's a vague question. If the damage you do with a weapon with a slow RoF is way more than the damage you can do with a weapon with a fast RoF in the time it takes the slow RoF weapon to reload/take another shot/ect, then damage. And visa versa.

I like picking the mid/high-damage low-ROF machine guns. Lots of ammo so you rarely have to reload, but with a controllable rate of fire. In most games I've played, the M60 typically falls in this category. Also great for suppressive fire if the need arises.

That, or a semi-auto rifle of some sort.

I like a nice mix of the two. For example, in Halo, I prefer the DMR greatly over an assault rifle. However, I hate snipers.
Usually it depends too. In a more realistic game where it takes less damage to kill, I like rate of fire. If you hit the guy he'll probably die. I almost never like an extremely high damage weapon though because if I miss I have to wait a good 5 seconds to shoot again. Of course, this exception lies with distance from enemy (shotgun) or what my enemy even is (vehicle/soldier).

There are too many variables depending on the situation.

Fire Rate, a high fire rate can compensate for relativaly low damage and so can dish the damage quicker. They all die anyway so how the gun goes *click* *boom* doesn't really matter
