I'm of the opinion that the reaction is stone-cold insane, but what probably provoked this was the power-tripping bit of crazy the Obama mill ground out a short while ago with Hollywood celebrities pledging their support to Obama and specific favorite causes of his that aired in Utah or wherever. In other words, anyone paranoid in any sense about Obama has been given enough ammunition on this point prior to this to turn back the Mongol horde. Sure the administration will watch what they say NOW, but the previous DDR-esque propaganda for gradeschoolers means provoking Hatfields and McCoys together to fire from the hills no matter what he does in schools.
Where was this level of paranoia about Bush when he started eroding constitutional rights, deregulating the banks leading to your current economic woes, and used a national tragedy to destroy the fabric of habeus corpus and commit warcrimes, while one after another the members of his administration leave office due to scandals and lies?

I find skepticism to be highly dubious when it doesn't actually cut both ways.

Thank god I live in a country that puts its leadership under a microscope during good times and bad. If 9/11 happened here, the government would be overthrown for incompetance.

This is what happens when people mistake opinion for fact. And let me tell you, it happens ALL the time. After all, it's much easier to assume then to know.

At my school, the senior class students were going to watch Obama's speech he made on Wensday. But a bunch of crazy parents complained, saying its propoganda and is brainwashing the children. So instead of dealing with them, they made a permission slip that is needed to be signed in order to watch it. These are 17-19 year old people that need to get mommy's permission to hear our leader talk. This is really pathetic to me. We never needed permission to listen to Bush's idiotic rants
Do you prehaps live in the southern reigon of the US?

Does it really matter? Anyone who really wants to watch Obama's speech will be able to see it on the net within minutes of him giving it. So meh at the fuss about it.

Really don't see the point of trying to stop students from deciding whether or not their president is worth supporting or not. :x

No, because I always had to watch Bush's speeches in school without the option not to. Why should it be any different now? Just because there's a Democrat in office? That's ridiculous and a total double-standard. It's the president speaking, which anyone should be allowed to watch regardless of whether they agree with what he's saying.
im confused, did bush ever do that? i dont recall ever having any choice to listen to him. i think that people should have the option to listen or not but if they do they shouldnt need a form, likewise they shouldnt need one to opt out. it just seems like a lot of unnecessary rumpus to raise over such a mundane topic..... and yes i just wanted to use "rumpus"
At my middle school, we had to watch some of Bush's speeches as part of the morning announcement. There was no choice in it.

If I am not mistaken what I read in most schools was that it was completely up to the school whether they could show it. Same as with the teacher. And if a child wanted to leave the class he was free to do so. A permission slip is dumb. If they dont want to sign it they are just going to call their kid into school.

If it's on the internet no one can stop you from watching it. I have no need to watch it but it's not like sex ed or a field trip and brainwashing was created by republicans.

I can't relate to stuff like this, I think it's because I don't live in any of the retarded countries where people could get away with that kind of behaviour, like Germany or the US.

It is absolutely ridiculous how most adults are reacting to giving people the opportunity to listen to the president about subjects like education or if related to other classes pertaining to a presidential speech.

This says two things about our country.
1. People still don't believe he is president.
2. Despite the majority of children in the western world are not truly aware of racism that has existed in history there are still the subtle remains of racism that controls people's actions and decisions. So although the good guys are winning and although children could use a bit of humility when it comes to the subject of race there are still children being taught by their parents and others to be prejudiced against other people of race, religion, and sexual orientation.

It is bad enough we have an entire generation that believes that government is evil but if the people can't have respect for a position that demands a basic level of respect then they need to take a good hard look into a mirror and see how jaded they have become.
Pretty much right, 'cept for the "subtle" part. It's pretty out in the open now, for people who know what to look for.

How is it any less brainwashing to ban someone from doing something and forming their own opinions.

These are the same parents that wouldn't let their kids clean up a glass they broke or do an oil change.

I am very sorry to hear that, I feel for you. My middle school made us watch a power point with some pictures of people jumping of the empire state building when the planes hit them. I really didn't want to see that.

If you're old enough to vote (I'm not American so I may be wrong on the voting age) then you should be able to watch your leader speak without permission. Just seems silly to me.
Dunno if someone told you this already, but if not, the voting age is 18. Same goes for everything non-alcohol related. Except sex, which is dealt with on a state-by-state basis I believe.

Anyway, who cares? This would have happened eventually: that it came to pass under Obama is likely nothing more than circumstance.

I would posit that it's because people in his own party think his race is an excuse to get away with anything as long as they can have him rubber-stamp it, decrying all things in opposition to him as racist and polarizing matters worse, while a few of those who really believed in change feel misled.
Then again, I'm apparently one of those evil racists.
Oh you mean his "socialist" health-care ideas! Damn commies and their horrible visions of free good health for everyone. Oh well, I'm in Canada, where sick people get what they need, whether or not they can afford the large price tag. Sure the system needs some tweaks, but I'd rather have a strained and open medical system, and pay a few more dollars in taxes, then an expensive "pay-as-you-go" one.

I'll agree that some people use their race as an excuse to get what they want, but I don't think Obama is guilty of that. In my opinion, Obama is far superior to Bush in every way. However, they're all politicians in the end, and my rule of thumb is don't trust anything they say or imply.

You're an adult at 18 in america

edit: Also, the closest to this I'll accept is making it so if you're a minor your parents could send in a note that won't let you watch the speach, but don't demand permission, demand that if you're a paranoid parent you take action.

High school should be mature enough for watching it by themselves.
Younger than that however is defiantly needing a slip.
