Pessimistic about Society and the AI in video games, and my luck, but generally optimistic about other stuff.

The other stuff is admittedly not much, but it includes thinking I won't die everyday, which is always a plus.

How about Apathetic-ist? Will that work for you?
Whatever happens, happens, and then I'll deal with it. Don't really care one way or the other.

Both. I'm optimistic about my life, I love living and I'm happy, I think my life will only get better because I'm easily amused.

However I think the government sucks, the world is getting worse, people are mostly stupid and there are so many, many problems.

So what do you call that? I'm pessimistic about the world, but optimistic about my personal future.

Without sounding aloof I dont know how to answer that question. I think I use logic more often than a quick decision. For instance, the question is a glass half full of half empty? To me I dont know unless I either saw the glass be filled to halfway or drained to halfway... just how I think.

If you go in thinking everything's going to fail there are two possible outcomes:
1) It fails, you are right. You get to bask in the knowledge you were right all along.
2) It goes right, pleasant surprise, you lose nothing.

There's less disappointment if you only expect the worst.
This.

I'll admit that Yahtzee got me into thinking that way (and you too probably, considering your avatar), but it's really the best way to go. Although occasionally I get my hopes up so far that I just can't bring myself to believe it will go wrong.
Plus everybody will hate you for always telling them things will go tits up.
Surprisingly, I had this attitude towards life long before Yahtzee, he just reinforced my belief XD

Wonderfully Optimistic, if a bit neurotic and paranoid.

When people ask me "Is the cup half empty or half full" I always answer thusly.

"It depends. If it was empty, and you filled it half way, it is half full. If you half-emptied a full cup, it is half empty. Stop your psychological crap"

My favourite psychanalysis question is

"Your house is on fire, what is the ONE thing you take out"

COOKIE FOR CORRECT ANSWER.

Seriously a lot of you people are bigger buzz-kills than Buzz Killington. I'm seeing far too many teenagers on The Escapist with shitty attitudes and outlooks on life. Sure the world is a terrible place a lot of the time but are you just going to give up and let events beyond your control decide for you? Why should you? Pessimism is for the weak.

On the other hand, it was relieving to see more than 3 'optimist' posts. Even when there's no water in the glass it's still full of air.

Now everyone go and listen to 'PMA 'til I'm DOA' by Cancer Bats and cheer the fuck up.

I'd say I can be both, but usually I'm pessimistic. I see it this way: if things go right, then it's a pleasant surprise. But if it doesn't, then you're right and prepared for it. Guess that makes me more of a realist?

Pessimisim is just honesty given a bad press.
No, pessimism is the cowardly way out of emotional involvement in anything.

As you can probably tell, I'm an optimist, character flaw/strength it may be...
Erm, I'd have to disagree there. Even though I'd consider myself more of a realist then a pessimist, I have quite a few optimistic tendencies and am incredibly passionate. I have many opinions (as anyone who'se read any of my tl;dr posts has figured out by now) and wear my emotions on my sleeve. Does being a pessimist/realist deminish that? I don't feel like it does. *shrug*
We're talking in absolutes, so if you see yourself this way then no, the statement doesn't apply, but if you were a fuly paid up pessimist it would greatly diminish your emotional investment in things. The reality is that many people are like you, tending towards one but having elements of the other in their personality.

Here's an example: a pure optimist and a pure pessimist build a boat. The optimist believes it won't sink while the pessimist is resigned to the fact that it probably will. If it sinks, the optimist's hope is crushed, while the pessimist saw it coming, and is less affected, but if it doesn't sink the optimist is happy that he is right while the pessimist awaits the inevitable. Now, if there was a jot of optimism in the pessimist's gnarled and cynical heart then he might be pleased the boat is afloat, and similarly the optimist might be able to cope better as he had the nagging doubt that he wasn't a trained ship-builder.

I'm over-stating but essentially pessimists have few ups or downs, and it seems an easy way out of investing emotionally to avoid let downs...

I'm a realist. People will be jackasses, but that doesn't mean things will never work out!

For the purposes of the two option, I'm gonna say optimist :)
