Should people stop accusing every game recently made to be a rip off of God of War or Halo?

The problem is some games barrow too heavily from other games...
There's borrow...then there's Dante's Inferno, that game is identical to God of War. Every movement is Kraytos, he even has a move where he forces his Cross (Blade) into the face of an enemy. That's not borrowing, that's not homage, that is just plain copying.

At least in Darksiders when they copied the portal gun they made it the same colors so it's like "Well at least they KNOW, and are saying where they got it from"
Dante's Inferno is hilarious, it rips off all three big hack n slash titles, it has loads of similarities to Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry too.

The front of a magazine had Dante vs Kratos on it and I just thought...:0 gosh, what? DMC 5?

As far as I'm aware the main games that are being ripped off at the moment are god of war and gears of war and that is with dante inferno (shameless GOW clone) and Dark Void which I think is built on the Unreal Engine anyway, hence being rather similar to gears of war.

I don't agree with all of Yahtzees comparisions to god of war though, Bayonetta is ripping off Devil May Cry and Darksiders is ripping off legend of zelda (ha ha) two entirely different games

The issue isnt that people are borrowing ideas it that they aren't coming up with new ones, for example Call of duty borrows the regenerating health idea originally introduced by halo, but modern warfare has added enough features of its own to be its own game, The games critisized for being rip offs of games seem to be practically total conversions of the games in question, Dark void may be viewed more favoruably because although it does use the unreal engine it does stray from gears of war by adding a jetpack.
Excellently put.
Honestly, this is 100% correct it isn't borrowing a few ideas, it's borrowing EVERY GAMEPLAY MECHANIC.

I've never heard of a "halo rip off", but I'm getting sick of hearing of games coping God of War because they are the same style. Exception to that, Heavenly Sword. That was pretty much God of War only with a girl lead character and cut scenes instead of walking around.

Darksiders he has a point with, but it's closer to 3D Zelda, Bayonetta is not a God of War rip-off, if it rips off anything, it's DMC4, and I really wouldn't say that, because developers can't really "rip-off" their own game.
Bayonetta is by the director of Devil May Cry, You cna't really rip-off something you yourself have made.

well i guess at this day and age with so many games out as it is, it isnt that unlikely that a concept will be influenced by a preexsisting game. Trailblazes and original content is hard to come by. I guess.

but a lot of them are. With the exception of Darksiders, which is a ripoff of Zelda

Yes. Both games are just trendsetters. Imagine playing Half-Life in 1998 and then saying: "OMG you shoot stuff and it blows up, this game is like doom and wolfenstein lol ripoff really"

Sort of the same principle.

It's at least not like the reverse rubbish I get to hear from a friend who once told me that God of War was a ripoff of Shadow of the Colossus simply because very large creatures are featured in both games. It's only in God of War for only a few minutes (the huge Ares and the Titan Cronos) while Shadow of the Colossus revolved around sixteen gigantic creatures that the player has to take down. The player doesn't even climb them as Kratos in the pure sense of the word, most of it is shown in cutscenes. Now that I think of it: Kratos doesn't even climb Ares.

On top of that, God of War was released a year before Shadow of the Colossus. So that doesn't even make sense from a chronological point of view.

I have yet to see this trend that you speak of.
If it is happening yes, they should.
This was more than likely triggered by the accusations that Darksiders, Bayonetta and Dante's Inferno all feel very much like God of War in some respects. (Don't ask how Bayonetta got in there, as it's definitely more Devil May Cry.)

And the "it's like Halo" accusations would probably be stemming from any FPSs that, well, feel like Halo.

OT: Yeah, people should stop. Does anyone really care about similarities between games?
Well, there are two concerns. Number one: Plagiarism. Is it right for game developers to blatantly rip-off other game developers?

Number two: Why would I want to pay money for a game I already have?

I've noticed a huge increase in Hack 'n Slash games so far I guess they're getting tired of FPSes, and I've noticed the God of War rip-off claim coming up a lot I haven't noticed any Halo rie-off claims except for the occasional troll who never has any evidence to back it up.
Personally I don't play Hack 'n slash games because I find mashing random buttons too easy, I suck and I mean suck at FPSes but I prefer to play them for a challenge so all this "rip-off" stuff hasn't really affected me.

I don't know about others but with Dante's Inferno, they have every right. That game is a shameless rip-off of God of War, down to a tee.

Well, yes, that's a good point. But I was more talking about slight similarities. Like combat systems and the like.

Why is it that every new game that comes out has to be related to some other similar game? If the characters have swords, its a God of War rip off. If anybody has a gun, it immediately copies off of Halo. Not every game that is produced can be revolutionary, and has anybody stopped to think that maybe, just maybe they are similar because the designers wanted to use a feature that clearly works? Do you decide to not buy games just because they're similar to another one? We'd only have about 5 games if no other developer was allowed to borrow things from other games...
You're missing the point that there is just very little innovation in the gaming industry. You can't blame people for being upset about it. In fact, anyone who serious cares about gaming SHOULD be upset over it.

he referenced how the game copied off of GOW literally every 20 seconds.

First: God of War copied Devil May Cry

Second: Halo copied something else

Third: There is very little originality in the industry at this point.

I think it should stop, yes. People are starting to forget why such things were ever said. While it's become no less true, it is starting to become just a thing people say rather than a real complaint.

Way to dislodge the OP's point. Go me!
