Should people stop accusing every game recently made to be a rip off of God of War or Halo?

There's a difference between one game being a ripoff of another, and one game being an inspiration for another. People like to confuse the two a lot.

Generally, I don't like calling things ripoffs unless, well, it's really obvious. Take that Chinese Super Mario Galaxy knockoff. That is a ripoff.

Dante's Inferno? Not so much a ripoff as it's obvious what the inspiration was.

By watching footage from Darksiders, I really see why others are comparing it to God of War and Zelda, but mostly God of War. The second I saw it, it really seemed like a God of War ripoff; the hack-and-slash was almost identical and what came out of enemies looked like a mirror image with a simple color swap.

For other games, I really haven't seen as strong as a resemblence to call it a ripoff, but if a game takes almost all the aspects from another game to make up its gameplay, then it truly is a ripoff and an uninspired one at that.

Also, people who claim that other games are ripoffs because they are slightly similar in one small detail but are unique in every other way have it wrong. An FPS is not a ripoff of Halo unless it is exactly identical without bringing something new to players.

I've never not bought a game because its derivitive of something else.

But yes,the comparisons to GOW are becoming overused considering GOW heavily rips off elements of other games.

There's borrow...then there's Dante's Inferno, that game is identical to God of War. Every movement is Kraytos, he even has a move where he forces his Cross (Blade) into the face of an enemy. That's not borrowing, that's not homage, that is just plain copying.

At least in Darksiders when they copied the portal gun they made it the same colors so it's like "Well at least they KNOW, and are saying where they got it from"
Dante's Inferno is hilarious, it rips off all three big hack n slash titles, it has loads of similarities to Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry too.

The front of a magazine had Dante vs Kratos on it and I just thought...:0 gosh, what? DMC 5?
DMC5 is out, it's called Bayonetta. ...Well it IS made by the original creator of DMC, RE4-5, Okami, Viewitful Joe 1 and 2. I can't imagine any DMCs having the impact without the orignal guy behind it.

I'm playing through Bayonetta and it's obvious he's the creator, it literally is DMC and Viewtuful Joe, plus her panther form is so Amaturatsu

Is it that hard to be original, though? Maybe if game makers don't want to be accused of ripping off God of War or Halo, they shouldn't rip off the game.

Why is it that every new game that comes out has to be related to some other similar game? If the characters have swords, its a God of War rip off. If anybody has a gun, it immediately copies off of Halo. Not every game that is produced can be revolutionary, and has anybody stopped to think that maybe, just maybe they are similar because the designers wanted to use a feature that clearly works? Do you decide to not buy games just because they're similar to another one? We'd only have about 5 games if no other developer was allowed to borrow things from other games...
Nothing rips off Halo but halo itself and ridiculously shitty things like Darkwatch

I also would like to point out that half of the time when people say such things, they are being stupid.

Well you don't see games comming out to be too different do you? I mean, it either seems to have guns or swords with enemies these days. I don't understand why they don't come up with something more unique, we have the technology after all. I could think of some game ideas right now, it's called originality.

Maze: A game about a massive mazed filled with death traps and puzzels about a serial killer who likes to watch his victems run a gauntlet.

Spirit Frenzy: You play the role of a ghost come back to haunt a family of rich, spoiled, bastards who ran you over with their limozine. Maybe you can possess and kill the people in the house, or just torment them. Deffinitly shouldn't be a kid's game.

The Beast: Start as a small oddity in animal evolution and grow to epic proportions as you become a massive monster, choose land, sea, or aire and terrorize civilizations accordingly. Unleash chaos with special abilies, and make your entirly original creature to eat, squish, and destroy humanity.

Carnivores (for x-box360): this would be solid gold, hunting dinosoaurs, keeping records and trophies, there would be plenty of reasons to compete with your freinds. With the graphics of the x-box 360 it would be an awsome idea. Some great potential for gore too if your a fan of blood and guts. Nothing would feel better then knowing you bagged the biggest t- rex out of all your freinds.

If done right these ideas I think would do well.

I guess that's what happens when one game becomes so popular it virtually defines the genre. I mean, you can't even think about making an MMO without getting hit over and over with how you are "copying" WoW, as if WoW wasn't just a MUD with graphics.

These days, you can't have killing, sex or drugs without some other game having done it first.

So yeah, while it's hard to be totally original with a game nowadays there are some games that borrow fairly heavily sometimes to the point of absurtity. Honestly, I myself was amazed that Portal's portal-gun thing had to wait as long as Darksiders to get ripped off.

Me: "Wanna play a game of monopoly?

Idiot: "FUCK YOU! The Landlord's Game [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Landlord%27s_Game] came out years before Monopoly! I will play that and NOTHING else, I want none of your shameless rip-offs"

Me: "but the game has been refined over time..."

Idiot: "I am going to kill you now"

That is how I see those douchebags who ***** and moan that the game they love is so good that it spawns imitations.

Well then, why the hell not?
Lair was "revolutionary"... all the way directly from the charts to the bargain bin.

I personally am getting tired of everyone calling games Halo clones and God of War clones for the same reasons that the person who created this topic is. Because obviously Halo and God of War are 2 very successful franchises so developers want to use what works. And all games are going to have some element in common with another game in some way. Yet because of this people go to Gamestop, look at a game, and because it has futuristic guns and aliens think it is a Halo clone and don't even give it any rational thought and therefor, miss out on a potentially great game. Obviously the phrase "Don't judge a book by its cover" doesn't mean shit these days.

People fail to realize that sometimes these 'ripoffs' are better than the games they are ripping off of. I liked X-blades better than God of War, which was indeed a rip off of every other hack and slash.

Every button masher gets compared to GoW, and every FPS gets compared to Halo, because they are titans in their respective genres, but rarely have I seen someone call a game an outright rip off.
