I'm failing to see a problem.

He wasn't physically hurt or anything; most "hot sauce" is more vinegarish than truly hot; at best uncomfortable. Now if she's sprayed it in his eyes or something...

Twenty years ago, you were entitled to smack your kids if they acted up, now they practically own you and if you raise a hand you're looking at jail time.

Hot Sauce and Cold-Shower? Seems kinda 'mediocre?' compared to beating a child up or other...

Am I shocked? Not at all, I just think that that is a stupid punishment. I kinda can't believe that she would punish him like that. Some children can't even take a shower or are forced to have cold showers because of poverty so I don't see that as such a bad thing.

Seems kind of a 'dated' method of punishing someone. Pretty bizarre so I'm on the fence here.
[sub]Note that I come from a culture where eating hot/spicy food is a norm so don't go quoting me with that type of mind.[/sub]

Considering people have died drinking hot sauce and eating chilli's, she could damage the child's physical health. They should also check the daughter, if she shot the film, she's either doing so for the mother and the thing is set-up, or she's being abused as well.
Drinking and eating Chillis? Could you please give me some evidence, I've never seen an incident where someone has died from eating and drinking said food.

I also doubt that she could have done any serious damage except a sore throat or 'burning' tongue. Me and my brother eat worse than a mouthful to Tobasco and the only thing that happens is my eyes get watery and I go batshit crazy >.>

I'm open for enlightenment!

Nah, he's talking that super-hot sauce. Standard stuff is more like spicy vinegar.

Last time I checked this was about Tobasco >.>
[sub]Should I get a mouthful of tobasco and put it in my mouth for the time the kid had to endure and see what it feels like >.>? I'm going to take a drop and see what happens >.>[/sub]
EDIT:I just had like a teaspoon or more? of Tobasco and obviously that isn't what he felt but right now, my tongue/lips just sting and I feel kinda weird inside.

It's funny how people see this as disgraceful and yet they see nothing wrong with spanking. Of course it's child abuse but w/e.

Im wondering what the child actually did as there is no mention..

Actually, there is in the video. He got in trouble at school, and then lied about it. Doesn't deserve a mouthful of hotsauce (poor kid) and a freezing cold shower, that's just brutal.
Hey, rules are rules. In that house, you don't lie to your parents. End of.

Seriously? Rules are rules? Words cannot explain the intense ignorance of your statement.
Her house, her rules. If the boy didn't want a cold shower, he shouldn't have lied.
So... if the rules of my house were... if you say, betray my trust, you get locked in the cold, pitch black basement for a day with starving rats... would that also count as "My House, My Rules"?
Pretty much. I wouldn't betray your trust in your house.
You do realize what I stated is torture, right? As in, something that can get me time behind bars.
All the more reason not to betray your trust.

I had my mouth washed out with soap before for lying, and for swearing at a young age.

As for the Tabasco sauce I see it the same way, it's not really going to cause any physical damage, it's discomforting and probably a little painful to the child, but far from abuse in itself. Nor is the cold shower, it can be a little painful, but it's not like she is making him stand in a bucket of ice water. The real abuse in the video is the fact that the child is so afraid of the mother that he doesn't even want to talk to her about what he did. She constantly belittles and humiliates him with the punishments, it's in the way she talks to him, and the way she acts.

Punishments are about instilling discipline, they are about discouraging behavior, it's not the child the was bad but their actions. Taking it so far that the child is terrified of even talking to you is just plain wrong.

As for the video itself, it's a bit old.

That's what Tabasco sauce is: red pepper juice in a vinegar base. It might be a bit uncomfortable, but I certainly wouldn't call it torture.

Whether this deserves jail time or loss of custody, I'm not really sure. I don't think this is really torture as some people are saying, but it's certainly not a good way to punish a child. I by no means agree with her methods, but I wouldn't call it torture.

EDIT: I'm terribly sorry. I had some sort of crazy internet error. The multiple post is completely unintentional. Is there a way to delete posts?

I have to wonder why someone would film it...

I feel sorry for the people who have children just because they need to feel some sort of control over someone else. How pathetic must they be?
Yes, she could have done a lot worse, but what she did was terrible. When your own child fears you, it's time to take a step back and sort yourself out.
And the "What do you get when you lie to me?" "Hot sauce" tells me that this is a regular punishment. A punishment that clearly doesn't fucking work, otherwise he'd stop lying. Or does the mother think her son is going to grow up being completely honest, all the time?
I used to get my mouth washed out when I was younger for swearing and that clearly didn't stop me.

It makes me so angry that people like this are allowed to be parents. The cold shower thing was something my dad used to do, along with other stuff and he is a sick and twisted man who was sent to jail.

3/4 of the forum begs to differ though. Torture? I believe the term you're looking for is food.

Oh noez. Hot sauce.

Totally relevant to actual news. I'm glad they took their time to report on this rather than Egypt.

That is two steps over the line even by Asian standards, and it was on an adopted child from Russia.
Stop right there buddy, I'm an Asian that has it nice but I'm pretty damn sure that Hot-Sauce is like a morning snack and a cold shower is a cause of poverty.

I'd call it a norm in Asian Standards.

I'm gonna make you a favour and pretend I missed that post.
Why would I give a shit if you see or don't see my post?
One would assume this is the point of posting in a forum.

Anyway, the notion "You're in my house, so if you don't follow my roules I can do whatever I want to you" is insane.

When we're talking about a KID she ADOPTED, insane doesn't begin to describe it.

Thare's nothing wrong with this, really. Hot sauce doesn't do any long-term damage, it just stings for a while. Maybe a long while, yes, but not for the rest of his life. And the cold shower? It's a COLD SHOWER. It's a shower, and it's cold. I don't think someone's died by having water pouring on them. Maybe slipping thin the shower, but not just from the shower.

I'm on the mom's side.
